24/7 Engineering
Bayswater
- About the role
24/7 Engineering is seeking an experienced Sales Estimator to join our growing structural steel fabrication business. This is a combined estimating and sales role for someone who understands steel, can price work accurately, and knows how to turn opportunities into secured projects.
You’ll be involved from the front end - reviewing enquiries, drawings and specifications, preparing competitive estimates, speaking directly with builders and clients, following up quotations and helping convert opportunities into profitable work.
We’re looking for someone commercially minded. Producing an accurate estimate is only part of the job. You’ll understand the client, follow the chance, negotiate where required and actively work to win the project.
What you’ll be doing
Your role will cover both estimating and business development, including:
- Reviewing architectural, structural and engineering drawings, specifications and tender documentation
- Completing quantity take-offs and determining steel, labour, fabrication, coating, transport and installation requirements
- Preparing accurate and commercially competitive estimates and quotations
- Assessing project scope, complexity, programme and potential commercial risks
- Obtaining and reviewing supplier and subcontractor pricing
- Preparing tender submissions, proposals and quotation documentation
- Responding to incoming enquiries and identifying suitable opportunities
- Following up submitted quotations and tenders
- Building relationships with builders, developers, engineers and existing clients
- Proactively generating new opportunities and developing client relationships
- Negotiating pricing, scope and commercial terms to help secure projects
- Working with management to determine pricing strategy and margins
- Reviewing exclusions, qualifications and scope gaps before submission
- Conducting handovers of successful projects to the operations/project team
- Maintaining an active pipeline of enquiries, quotations and upcoming projects
- Following up lost opportunities to understand pricing and market feedback
- Reviewing estimated versus actual project costs to improve future estimating accuracy
- Identifying opportunities for repeat work and long-term client relationships
What we’re looking for We’re looking for someone with solid experience in structural steel fabrication and estimating who is also comfortable dealing directly with clients and winning work.
Ideally, you will have:
- Minimum 3–5 years' experience in structural steel estimating, fabrication, construction or a closely related field
- Strong understanding of structural steel fabrication and erection
- Demonstrated ability to interpret structural drawings, architectural drawings and project specifications
- Strong quantity take-off and estimating capability
- Understanding of fabrication labour, material costs, coatings, transport and installation
- Commercial awareness and an understanding of project margins
- Experience preparing and submitting tenders and quotations
- Confidence following up quotations and asking for the work
- Strong communication, negotiation and relationship-building skills
- Ability to communicate effectively with builders, engineers, suppliers and project teams
- Strong attention to detail without losing sight of the commercial outcome
- Ability to manage multiple tenders and opportunities at the same time
- Strong Excel and general computer skills
- A proactive approach - you don't wait for opportunities to come to you
Experience with estimating software, project management systems or steel fabrication software will be highly regarded. Existing relationships within Melbourne's construction, structural steel or engineering,
OEM industries would also be an advantage.
The person we want
This role will suit someone who sits comfortably between technical estimating and sales.
You might currently be an estimator who is good with clients and wants more involvement in winning work. Or you may already be working in a sales/estimating position and want greater responsibility.
We want someone who can look at a set of drawings and understand what it will take to fabricate and deliver the job - but who can also pick up the phone, speak confidently with the client and move the opportunity forward.
You’ll be expected to take ownership of your pipeline rather than simply prepare quotes and wait for a response.
Why join 24/7 Engineering?
24/7 Engineering is an established and growing Melbourne steel fabrication business working across a diverse range of structural steel projects.
We operate across multiple facilities and have built the business around strong fabrication capability, responsive service and the ability to deliver demanding projects.
This role gives you the opportunity to have a direct impact on the company's growth.
You’ll work closely with management and the operational team, giving you visibility over the entire project lifecycle - from the first enquiry and estimate through fabrication, delivery and completion.
For the right person, there is significant scope to grow with the business and take greater responsibility for estimating, sales and business development.
