Key Relationships The School Nurse Manager reports directly to the Head of Risk,

Safety & Compliance and is responsible for leading and managing the School Nurses. The role works closely with the School

Leadership Team, student services, teaching and boarding staff to oversee and coordinate the delivery of the School’s health services.

Position Objective:

The School Nurse Manager leads a team of nurses who provide the School’s health services program based on the requirements established by School policies and procedures as well as state and federal regulations.

The School Nurse

Manager will oversee the provision of primary nursing and health care for students and staff and coordinate the daily operation of the Health Centre and Nursing services provided to the Boarding House, which will include first aid, emergency treatment and ongoing holistic health care for the School community.

The role will work closely with the Wellbeing team and the School Health Centre staff in the provision of holistic health care that reflects the mental, emotional and physical needs of students and boarders.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Student Management

- Deliver quality assessment, treatment and referral of ill and injured students in a timely manner

on presentation to the Health Centre and /or on School Grounds as necessary.
- Provide friendly, professional and efficient services to students, and staff, and where appropriate

or required, contractors, volunteers and visitors to the School.
- Educate and manage students with serious and chronic illnesses.
- Prepare and coordinate medication and first aid management for camps and excursions with

teaching staff.
- Effectively communicate with families regarding student medical conditions and arrangement of health

care plans, medication administration and emergency kits and plans as per the required Standard Operating Procedure.
- Ensure timely and accurate communication with relevant staff and the parents of students in relation

to their child’s health and treatment.
- Lead and manage nursing staff dedicated to the Boarding House ensuring Boarding students receive

consistent medical and wellbeing care during dedicated boarding house nursing hours.
- Liaise with School Psychologists, Counsellors and other Wellbeing staff regarding student mental health

and wellbeing issues.
- Meet as required with the boarding leadership in relation to boarding student health and well-being

needs.
- Provision of Health Risk Assessments for all students attending off site activities.




- Ensure that Sports Coordinators are aware of basic medical protocols that apply to sports injuries.
- Notify relevant School offices of any absence/movement of students as required.
- Be familiar with the School’s Child Safety and Wellbeing Policy and mandatory reporting requirements.

2. Health Centre Management

- Maintain the Westminster School Health Centre Policy and Procedure manual to ensure safe nursing practice within the facility (including a protocol for medical and other referrals).

- Maintain school Automated External Defibrillators (AED) in accordance with manufacturer guidelines,

ensuring compliance with all relevant legislative requirements.
- Manage the dispensing of medication to students, ensuring accurate accounting and stock records for

all medical stores.
- Ensure appropriate controls over the dispensing of medication to students who have written consent

from their parents or guardians.
- Liaise with Public Health authorities and the Deputy Principal/Head of Senior School regarding relevant

vaccination programs.
- Ensure stocks of medications and dressings are maintained within the Health Centre.
- Maintain and distribute First Aid kits for use across the School (including Boarding House and for camps

& excursions) and ensure prompt return to Health Centre.
- Maintain a register of First Aid kits, with details of supplies contained within each kit.
- Maintain and uphold the Westminster School values.

3. Lead and Manage the Health Centre staff

- Provide leadership to the Health Centre team, demonstrating a commitment to effective working

relationships, and to developing staff morale, harmony and teamwork.
- Maintain efficient procedures and systems for delivery of service.
- Oversight of purchasing and maintenance of resources for the use of all staff.
- Prepare and manage Health Centre annual budget.
- Perform delegated line management responsibilities for the team of School Nurses.
- Manage the Health Centre team professional development and manage goal setting and annual

performance reviews. 4. Medical Records

- Maintain well documented records on all students/staff who have sought a consultation in line with legislative requirements.

- Remove or modify the last sentence regarding incident reports on all accidents for presenting students.

The responsibility for completing accident incident reports lies with the staff member who witnessed/managed the incident in the first instance.
- Keep medical records up to date, confidential and accurate.
- Manage and update health management plans for students with medical needs and medication expiry

for emergency management kits (i.e. diabetes, seizures, food allergies, asthma).
- Complete incident reports on all accidents for students presenting at the Health Centre and assist with

the corrective action process. 5. Education

- Assist with the provision of ongoing education, support and guidance to other health care team

members, including teachers with first aid qualifications, other general staff, and volunteers.
- Educate staff members as necessary on relevant care for specific illnesses (i.e. allergies, administration

of EpiPen).




- Liaise with teaching staff as a curriculum resource in the area of health education.
- Provision of health care resources to students and staff as directed.
- Work with relevant staff to develop health and lifestyle programs for students and staff.
- Attend professional development relevant to school nursing.
- The ability to (or desire to be upskilled to) facilitate first aid training to employee, certifying them in

HLTAID012 – Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting. 6. Standards

- Refer and comply with relevant legislation relating to school nursing practice and child and adolescent

healthcare.
- Coordinate, organise and provide health promotion considering a whole of school community

approach.
- Contribute to the maintenance of a health work and learning environment that is respectful, safe and

supportive of students and whole school community.
- Engage in cooperative practice to provide comprehensive school nursing care.
- Work with the Director of Business Operations and Director of People and Culture to ensure that

appropriate standards of nursing practice are maintained by nursing staff.
- Attend periodic mandatory training updates including, but not limited to, Manual Handling, Drug

Calculation, Mandatory Notification training, Fire Safety training, Emergency Evacuation Training, Senior First Aid certificate (encompassing CPR and anaphylaxis training).
- Attend relevant school activities such as professional learning days prior to term commencement

including chapel service, whole school staff meetings and weekly senior school briefings.
- Effectively maintain communication with professional organisations such as AISSA, SASNA and BSNA.

Key Selection Criteria: Qualifications, Skills and Experience

- Hold registration by the Nurses Board of South Australia as a Registered Nurse and a current practising

certificate with at least 3 years, full time equivalent, post-registration experience.
- Current certification - Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting.
- Anaphylaxis Management Qualifications.
- Demonstrated competency in Basic Life Support.
- Undertaken approved training in Immunisation Administration.
- Understanding of the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council (‘ANMC’) National Competencies for

the Registered Nurse and Midwifes in Recommended Domains.
- Knowledge and understanding of the ANMC Code of professional Conduct for Nurses in Australia (2003).
- Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40122) desirable
