Senior Data Architect Permanent | Melbourne | Hybrid

We’re partnering with an established technology organisation that is going through an exciting period of change and growth, and we’re looking for a Senior Data Architect / Database Architect to join the team permanently.

This is a genuinely hands-on role for someone who enjoys getting into complex database environments, understanding how systems and data work together, and bringing structure to platforms that have evolved over time.

The Opportunity The organisation has a mature technology platform that has evolved over many years, including legacy components and a number of different data technologies.

Your initial focus will be to build a detailed understanding of the environment, from the underlying databases and schemas through to application behaviour, user journeys, integrations and reporting.

You'll work closely with developers, Product Managers and technology stakeholders to understand how data is created, stored, transformed and consumed.

This isn't a role where you'll simply produce architecture diagrams from a distance. You'll be expected to get hands-on with databases, investigate how the platform works and speak directly with the people who build and use it.

Once the initial discovery phase is complete, the role will broaden into ongoing database and data architecture responsibilities, with scope across optimisation, data migration, reporting and broader data initiatives.

What You'll Be Doing

During the initial discovery phase, you'll:

- Investigate and document the existing database workplace.
- Analyse schemas, relationships,



dependencies and data structures.
- Reverse-engineer how data moves through applications and systems.
- Work with developers to understand application-level data flows and logic.
- Work with Product Managers to map user journeys and understand how data is captured and used.
- Document integrations and key data flows across the platform.
- Identify legacy technology, technical debt and opportunities for improvement.
- Develop clear data models and supporting technical documentation.
- Establish a reliable source of knowledge around the existing data environment.
- Provide recommendations to support future platform development, integration and data initiatives.

As the role evolves, you'll contribute to:

- Database architecture and administration.
- Database performance tuning and optimisation.
- Data migration and movement initiatives.
- Reporting and analytics requirements.
- Data integration and platform improvements.
- Data governance and broader data architecture initiatives.
- Future technology and platform projects.

What We're Looking For We're looking for someone who combines deep database expertise with solid architecture, investigation and communication skills.

You'll ideally have:

- Strong hands-on experience with MySQL and/or AWS Aurora .




- Excellent SQL and database architecture skills.
- Experience working with complex or evolving database environments.
- Strong understanding of schemas, relationships, metadata and database dependencies.
- Experience with database discovery, reverse engineering or technical documentation.
- Strong data modelling capability.
- Experience understanding data flows across applications and integrations.
- The ability to work with developers and understand application-level data behaviour.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
- A methodical approach to investigating complex technical environments.
- The ability to take ownership of a defined project and deliver tangible outcomes.

Technical Environment The core environment is AWS-based , with MySQL/Aurora as the primary database technology. There is also exposure to technologies including:

- MongoDB
- DynamoDB
- DocumentDB
- AWS services
- APIs and integrations
- Application databases
- Reporting platforms
- Other NoSQL technologies

You don't need experience across every technology listed. We're particularly interested in candidates with strong MySQL/Aurora and database architecture experience who can learn and navigate the wider environment. Experience with application development or the ability to understand code will be highly regarded.

The team currently operates around 2–3 days per week in the office , with flexibility around the working week.
