Our Product - Onyx
We’re building the world’s most advanced automated precast (concrete) production system that will be sold and deployed globally.
Onyx is a multiple industrial arm-driven system, capable of producing dozens of large (up to 12 ton) precast elements daily. The system employs a dozen custom end effectors, AGVs and in house software to near-fully automate the existing industrial process.
R&D; is never complete, and as such there's still a healthy backlog of new features and improvements in the pipeline.
The Team
We’re a small engineering team of two in house and one third-party engineer.
All of the R&D; happens inside our existing (old school) precast factory of 6 staff which acts as a rollout partner and source of knowledge.
We have secured our first customer and have orders out for more, making it an exciting time to join as we start to deploy, scale and grow the commercial automation side of the business.
Role Title
Senior Automation Engineer – Mechatronics, Electrical
(Direct report to the CEO)
What You’ll Actually Do
- Take ownership of iterative design, optimisation and industrialisation of all robotic end-effectors and tooling.
- Integrate PLC-based subsystems into the broader architecture.
- Design and integrate the SCADA layer for monitoring, control and data acquisition across the entire plant.
- Co-design a 15-tonne automated vertical storage and lifting system with our structural and mechanical teams and external fabricators.
- Integrate and commission the AGV fleet into the production flow.
- Value-engineer every aspect of the automation for reliability, cycle time, cost and serviceability.
- Work shoulder-to-shoulder with our existing engineers, third-party automation partner and the CEO who writes the software.
- Be the go-to technical authority as we scale from prototype → commercial product → multiple customer installations.
- Required is up to 30 nights in 2027 away from home, near Port Macquarie, supporting our first commercial installation.

Must-Have Experience
- 5+ years in automation/mechatronics/electrical engineering (ideally manufacturing or materials-handling environments).
- Hands-on PLC integration and commissioning experience.
- SCADA system design and integration experience.
- Value-engineering mindset – you naturally shave seconds and dollars without sacrificing quality.
- Comfortable owning the full lifecycle: requirements → design → fabrication → programming → commissioning → continuous improvement.

Location & Logistics
