Solicitor – Avant Law (Professional Conduct) Sydney

Avant Law is a national specialist law firm looking for a Solicitor to join our professional conduct team in Sydney, working under the leadership of John Kamaras and joining a team of purpose-driven lawyers who are passionate about defending medical practitioners. If you are looking for a law firm without daily billable targets and instead focussed upon collaboration, advocacy and making a difference for doctors we want to hear from you.

This is an chance for a junior lawyer (1-2 PAE ) to develop their career working for Australia’s largest specialist medical defence law firm that has been recognised for its wide range of expertise. This is a permanent full-time role with a hybrid work arrangement.

The key responsibilities include:

Under supervision commensurate with experience and in compliance with practicing certificate:

- Provide a professional, thorough and effective legal service to achieve the best outcome for Avant's members and practices.
- Prepare and manage legal files relating to claims, coronial inquests and/or complaints and other matters.
- Represent members in matters before AHPRA, the Health Care Complaints Commission and other regulatory bodies; before courts; and/or tribunals and/or inquiries.
- Provide a professional, thorough and effective legal service to achieve the best outcome for Avant's members.
- Provide oral and written legal advice to members and Avant Claims Managers and other internal clients concerning legal claims and/or complaints and general medico-legal advice.

To be successful in this role you will be:

- Eligible to hold a practising certificate as a Solicitor in New South Wales. Those under supervised practice are encouraged to apply.
- Bachelor of Law or equivalent tertiary qualifications.
- Any post admission legal experience (1-2 years) in medical negligence litigation would be advantageous, preferably on the defendant side,



as would be the conduct of matters before AHPRA/the Health Care Complaints Commission and Coroners Court; or
- A demonstrated interest in Health Law, either from studies or practical work experience.
- Experience in civil litigation, and adjacent fields (e.g. personal injuries) also transferable.
- The ability to express ideas effectively with proven excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- High level of prioritisation, time management and self-management skills.
- Good computer literacy and competency to work in an electronic document management environment.
