An opportunity has become available for a senior technology specialist to play a leading role in the transformation of a large, business-critical application environment.
Working across architecture, engineering and business teams, you’ll help determine how a deeply established legacy platform can be progressively modernised without introducing unnecessary operational risk.
This is a hands-on technical leadership role rather than a purely advisory architecture position. You’ll be expected to understand how the existing application works, identify sensible boundaries for change, define modern service and API patterns, and help delivery teams move from architectural intent into working solutions.

What you’ll be responsible for

Shaping the modernisation approach
Take ownership of the technical approach for progressively transforming a large enterprise application environment.
You’ll assess how existing functionality, business processes, data dependencies and integrations are connected, then determine how the platform can be broken down and modernised in manageable stages.

Breaking down a complex legacy platform
Work through a highly interconnected Oracle-based application containing significant embedded business logic and long-standing dependencies.
Rather than attempting a wholesale replacement, you’ll help identify logical areas of functionality that can be separated, redesigned and progressively transitioned into a more modular architecture.

Designing the future application interfaces
Define how new services will interact with existing and future applications.
You’ll play a key role in API and interface design, including contracts, integration patterns, versioning and compatibility considerations, ensuring new capabilities can be introduced without unnecessarily disrupting existing consumers.

Creating a practical transition roadmap
Help determine what should change, when it should change and how individual pieces of the environment should move towards the desired architecture.
This will involve understanding technical dependencies, identifying delivery risks and helping teams sequence work in a way that supports continued operation of the existing platform throughout the transformation.

Turning architecture into deliverable solutions
Work beyond conceptual architecture and help translate the target state into designs that engineering teams can actually implement.
You’ll contribute to solution designs, technical reviews, implementation decisions, integration approaches and transition planning across multiple streams of work.

Managing legacy dependencies
Identify areas where applications, interfaces, data and business processes are tightly connected to the existing platform.
You’ll work with engineering teams to determine whether those dependencies should be retained temporarily, redesigned, isolated or removed as different parts of the workplace are modernised.

Working across technical disciplines
Partner with software engineers, architects,



data specialists, business SMEs and other technical leaders across the wider transformation.
You’ll often be the person joining the dots between different areas of the program and identifying technical consequences that may not be obvious within an individual workstream.

Using modern tooling to accelerate discovery
The program is also exploring the use of AI-assisted techniques to better understand and analyse complex legacy environments.
You’ll help determine how these capabilities can complement traditional application discovery and architecture activities while ensuring important design decisions remain grounded in business and technical context.

Providing technical direction
Act as a senior point of technical guidance when difficult modernisation decisions arise.
You’ll help stakeholders understand architectural options, dependencies and trade-offs and provide clear recommendations on approaches that are achievable within the realities of a complex production environment.

Establishing consistency across delivery
Help define the technical principles and review practices used across the transformation.
This could include architecture reviews, API and integration standards, solution-design guidance and assessing the wider impact of proposed changes before they move into delivery.
What we’re looking for We’re particularly interested in people who have worked on complex application transformation programs where modernisation has involved considerably more than simply moving infrastructure or upgrading technology.

What you’ll bring to this role

- Strong experience modernising large, business-critical enterprise applications.
- Previous exposure to complex Oracle-based application environments.
- Experience breaking large or tightly coupled applications into more manageable services or components.
- Strong application and solution architecture capability.
- Practical experience designing enterprise APIs and integration patterns.
- An understanding of domain-driven design, service-oriented architecture or similar application decomposition approaches.
- Experience navigating complex dependencies between applications, data, integrations and business processes.
- The ability to define a future-state architecture while recognising when an incremental or transitional design is the more practical option.
- Experience guiding technical delivery across multiple teams or workstreams.
- Strong software engineering and application-development knowledge.
- The ability to communicate complex architectural decisions clearly to both technical and senior business stakeholders.




- Experience providing design assurance, technical governance or architecture review across major technology programs.
- A willingness to remain technically involved rather than operating solely at an enterprise strategy level.

Exposure to distributed cloud architectures, enterprise integration and large-scale transformation programs would also be valuable.
