Data Analyst OR Data Engineer (2 x Contract Roles) – Databricks / PySpark / SQL – Canberra

About the opportunity (please note: this ad covers 2 roles)

We’re recruiting for two separate contract positions with a Federal Government client in Canberra, ACT:

1. Data Analyst (Contract)
2. Data Engineer (Contract)

These roles sit in a data-focused team delivering high-impact reporting and modern data platform outcomes. In office in Canberra (as per role requirement).

Contract length: approx. 36 weeks (role currently runs through to 30 June 2027 with a 6 month extention option

Location: Canberra ACT (on-site)

Role 1: Data Analyst — Key responsibilities

- Analyse complex datasets and translate business/reporting requirements into clear data specifications and analytical outputs
- Perform data profiling, reconciliation, validation/QA, and investigate anomalies
- Develop repeatable reports, documented business rules, and fit-for-purpose datasets for annual and ad hoc reporting
- Engage stakeholders and produce strong documentation / knowledge transfer

Data Analyst — Key skills/experience
- Advanced SQL
- Hands-on experience with Databricks / PySpark / Spark SQL for data preparation and analysis
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement

Role 2: Data Engineer — Key responsibilities




- Design and deliver scalable Databricks data solutions using PySpark, Spark SQL, SQL, Delta Lake
- Migrate SAS code/workflows/reporting processes into Databricks while preserving business logic and data quality
- Build maintainable ETL/ELT pipelines, including automated validation, monitoring, and performance optimisation
- Work with Azure DevOps / Git / CI/CD and controlled deployment practices
- Apply security/privacy/governance controls and produce clear technical documentation

Data Engineer — Key skills/experience
- Strong Databricks engineering experience (PySpark/Spark SQL/Delta Lake)
- ETL/ELT pipeline design + operationalisation
- DevOps/source control practices (Azure DevOps, Git, CI/CD)

Common criteria (applies to both roles)
- Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams and deliver outcomes to deadlines
- Desirable: experience working with sensitive data in government or similarly regulated environments
