Are you an experienced software engineer who enjoys working across the full technology stack?

The University of Newcastle is looking for a Senior Full Stack Developer / Senior DevOps Engineer to provide technical leadership across cloud platforms, application development and integration services.

This is a hands-on role where you’ll design, build and support modern technology solutions while helping to strengthen engineering practices, mentor other developers and solve complex technical challenges.

You’ll work across cloud infrastructure, application development, integration and DevOps, helping evolve the University’s technology platforms and applications to meet changing business needs.

The Role

You’ll work across a broad range of technical activities, including:

- Design, develop and operate contemporary solutions on AWS.
- Build and support backend, integration and web applications.
- Develop cloud infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code and automation.
- Design and maintain CI/CD pipelines and deployment processes.
- Build and integrate services using technologies such as API Gateway, AppSync, Lambda, ECS and SQS.
- Develop modern front-end applications using React and contemporary web technologies.
- Implement monitoring, observability, alerting and operational support practices.
- Diagnose complex technical issues and contribute to the ongoing evolution of University technology platforms.
- Provide technical leadership, mentor engineers and promote effective software engineering and DevOps practices.
- Work closely with stakeholders and delivery teams to understand problems, develop practical solutions and achieve delivery outcomes.

About you

You’re a senior software engineer who enjoys solving complex problems and working across development, cloud and operations. You will also have experience leading and managing a small technical team, including mentoring and developing engineers

You’ll bring strong experience in AWS, software engineering and DevOps, along with the ability to take ownership of solutions from design through to deployment and ongoing support.

Experience with Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD, cloud-native development, integration services and modern web development will be valuable.

We’re not expecting you to be an expert in every technology listed — if you bring strong experience across most of these areas and the ability to learn and adapt, we’d like to hear from you.

You’ll also have:

- Strong software engineering skills across backend, integration and web applications.
- Experience designing, building and operating solutions in AWS or a comparable cloud environment.
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code, such as CDK, CloudFormation, SAM or Terraform.
- Experience implementing CI/CD pipelines, deployment automation and DevOps practices.
- Experience with cloud services such as API Gateway, AppSync, Lambda, ECS and SQS, or comparable technologies.
- Experience with monitoring, observability,



alerting and operational support.
- Front-end development experience using React and modern web technologies.
- The ability to provide technical leadership, mentor engineers and contribute to delivery outcomes.
- Strong problem-solving, communication and stakeholder engagement skills.

It would be great if you also have

- Experience with serverless and event-driven architectures.
- Experience in platform engineering and developer enablement.
- AWS certifications or equivalent cloud qualifications

This continuing role is full time at a HEW 8 Higher Education Worker Level and is located at Callaghan Campus with a minimum of 3 days per week required on site.
