Job Description
The Engagement Officer provides individual and systemic advocacy under National and QLD Advocacy Program frameworks, promoting and protecting the human rights and social justice of people with disabilities. The role supports participants through NDIS internal reviews and external appeals, delivers community engagement activities, and contributes to organisational targets within funded geographical boundaries across various Rights In Action advocacy programs.

Key responsibilities

Deliver advocacy through client action plans, information provision, referrals, and support to people with disabilities, their families, and carers.
n
Conduct risk assessments and visit clients in supported accommodation, hospitals, correctional centres, and aged care facilities.
n
Provide person-led advocacy, increase knowledge of rights, and support individuals in achieving advocacy goals.
n
Support clients at tribunals, courts, and hearings (e.g., QCAT, ART, Mental Health Review Tribunal).
n
Identify systemic issues and contribute to responses through submissions, reports, and campaigns.
n
Support NDIS participants with internal reviews and external appeals.
n
Deliver education sessions on disability rights and the NDIS.
n
Establish and maintain links with community stakeholders and disability networks.
n
Maintain accurate client records and databases.
n
Attend staff meetings, case conferences, and external forums.

About you
n
n




Demonstrated understanding of individual advocacy and its relationship to the lives of people with disabilities.
n
Demonstrated commitment to human rights and social justice principles.
n
Knowledge of social (systemic) advocacy in the current political and social environments.
n
Demonstrated ability to analyse, plan and implement advocacy strategies with or on behalf of people with disabilities.
n
Proven high-level communication (verbal and written) and problem-solving skills.
n
Demonstrated competency in computer technology, time management, file management, and maintaining records for statistical and data purposes.
n
Working knowledge of the relevant Acts and Legislation, including the Disability Services Act(s), the Disability Discrimination Act, the Guardianship and Administration Act, the Right to Information, Privacy Legislation, the Mental Health Act, and the National Disability Insurance Scheme Act.
n
Current QLD driver's license.
n
Currently working with Children (Blue Card) or the capacity to obtain a Working with Children (Blue Card) and a Yellow Card Exemption notice.
n
Tertiary qualification in a related discipline or extensive previous experience working in human services (desirable).
