The Legal Counsel is VICSES' first internal legal position, established on an initial 18-month basis to build in-house legal capability and act as a first line of defence across the organisation.
The role provides generalist legal advice within a defined scope, manages the corporate insurance function, leads the annual legislative compliance program and manages the engagement of external legal providers for specialist matters.
$142,790 to $166,938 + 12% Superannuation

ROLE SUMMARY:
The position sits within the Strategy, Performance and Risk team, which houses VICSES' governance functions including risk, compliance, internal audit and insurance, and maintains a functional (dotted line) reporting relationship to the CEO to support independence on confidential and sensitive matters.
As the first role of its kind at VICSES, the Legal Counsel will establish the foundations of the internal legal function, including precedents, templates, triage processes and legal literacy across the organisation, and will build a support network with legal and governance counterparts in SES agencies in other jurisdictions and partner emergency service organisations to share practice approaches, precedents and sector insights.

We support them to understand their risk and the relevance of taking action before, during and after emergency events.
As the largest road rescue network in Australia we have specialist teams that provide a 24/7 response to road accident and trauma incidents.
We assist Victoria Police in search and rescue operations, and play an important role in supporting the Country Fire Authority (CFA), Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV), Parks Victoria and the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) during major bushfire and emergency incidents.
