Job Description
Player Development & Instruction Teach fundamentals:
Focus heavily on basic skills like dribbling, passing, shooting, and defensive positioning.
Plan Practices:
Organize and execute daily, structured after-school practice sessions.
Instill values:
Character growth, self-discipline, academic excellence, and emotional maturity.
Promote fair play:
Enforce a strict code of conduct, sportsmanship, and disciplined behavior.
Administrative & Logistics
Manage equipment:
distribute, track, clean, and inventory uniforms and team gear.
Coordinate transit:
Work with the school's Athletic Director to schedule buses for away games.
Verify eligibility:
Track player physical forms, grade reports, and parental consent slips.
Supervise facilities:
Ensure player safety in gymnasiums, locker rooms, and during travel.
Communication & Representation
Parent relations:
Host pre-season parent meetings to outline team rules and expectations.
Professionalism:
Maintain self-control and decorum with referees, opposing teams, and fans.
Report issues:
Inform the Athletic Director immediately of injuries, discipline problems, or facility hazards.
Coaching Qualifications
Required Credentials Background Check:




Must pass a comprehensive criminal history background check and fingerprinting (required for all Michigan school staff).
CPR/AED Certification:
Valid certification in First Aid, CPR, and AED operation.
Concussion Training:
Completion of the mandatory Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) concussion training protocol.
Driver's License:
Valid driver's license with reliable transportation
Preferred Experience & Skills
Teaching Certificate:
A valid Michigan Teacher's Certificate is heavily preferred but not required.
Basketball Knowledge:
Documented understanding of basketball strategies, rules, and rules variations specific to middle school sports.
Prior Coaching:
Previous experience coaching youth basketball or working with middle-school-aged children.
Availability:
Versatile schedule to accommodate after-school practices and evening game times.
Timeline:
The Middle School boys' basketball season in Michigan typically runs for roughly 7 to 8 weeks, generally spanning from late October through mid-to-late December (or sometimes longer depending on league structures).
Compensation:
Middle School coaching is typically paid as a stipend.
