The Australian National University

A governance opportunity of national significance.

The Australian National University (ANU) is seeking accomplished leaders to join its governing body as Council Members.

Established by the Commonwealth Parliament, the ANU occupies a unique place in Australia's national life. Through world-leading research, education and public engagement, the University contributes knowledge, innovation and expertise that help Australia navigate complex challenges and strengthen its engagement with the world.

As the ANU enters a new chapter of renewal and implementation of its ANU by 2030 Strategy, the University is seeking Council Members who can contribute to the stewardship of one of Australia's most significant institutions and help shape its future direction.

The Council is responsible for the strategic leadership, oversight and stewardship of the University, including its governance, culture, financial sustainability and risk management, and ensuring the institution continues to fulfil its national purpose. Council Members bring independent judgement, diverse perspectives and a commitment to effective governance.

Appointments will be made in line with the Council's skills matrix and the University's commitment to maintaining an appropriate balance of governance capability, professional expertise, lived experience and diverse perspectives. In particular, the University is interested in individuals who can contribute expertise across areas such as governance and leadership, strategy, finance, risk, higher education, public policy, research and innovation,



organisational transformation, people, culture and wellbeing, Indigenous engagement, commercial enterprise and stakeholder engagement. Candidates are not expected to demonstrate expertise across all areas, with appointments considered in the context of the overall composition and future needs of the Council.

We welcome expressions of interest from leaders across higher education, research, government, industry, the professions, the not-for-profit sector and First Nations communities. Experience governing large and complex organisations, together with the ability to contribute constructively, collaboratively and strategically, will be highly regarded.

Council meets at least six times each year, with meetings held in Canberra and online.
