It’s an exciting time to join WALGA’s Governance and Procurement team. We’re expanding our capacity to meet the evolving needs of the Local Government sector, and this newly created Governance Advisor role will play an significant part in that growth.
You’ll join experienced colleagues who provide practical guidance, resources and training to Local Governments across Western Australia, helping Members navigate governance, compliance and legislative requirements with confidence. This is a genuine part-time opportunity that sits firmly in WALGA's Sweet Spot, giving you the chance to do meaningful work that makes a difference while enjoying the flexibility of a four-day working week.
You'll combine research and analysis with practical problem-solving as you support Local Governments across Western Australia. From responding to member enquiries and developing governance resources to contributing to training, communications and legislative advice, you’ll help Members understand not just what the legislation says, but how to apply it in a way that works for their organisation.
What does a typical week look like?
No two weeks are quite the same in this role, and that's part of the appeal.
Supporting WA's 139 Local Governments means exposure to a huge range of governance, legislative and policy issues. It's an accelerated learning environment, providing opportunities to deepen your governance expertise, work on emerging sector issues and reforms, and gain insight into the breadth of challenges faced by Local Governments across the State.
One day you might be researching legislation and helping a member Local Government work through a governance or compliance issue. The next, you could be reviewing a policy or delegation, developing content for a governance alert, updating resources or helping prepare a webinar or workshop for members. A big part of the role is turning complex information into practical advice. You'll take the time to understand a member's circumstances, provide clear guidance and help identify solutions that are both compliant and workable in practice.
You'll also contribute to the resources, tools and training that build governance capability across the sector. This could include developing guides and templates, reviewing training materials, contributing to newsletters and alerts, or presenting information through workshops, webinars and other member forums.
The role also offers opportunities to contribute to broader policy and advocacy work, providing governance expertise on proposed legislative or regulatory changes and engaging with stakeholders across the sector.
This isn't a role where you'll simply interpret legislation and provide technical answers. You'll work directly with members, build trusted relationships and help Local Governments apply governance requirements in ways that support better decision-making and stronger organisational outcomes.
Let's talk about you!
You're someone who enjoys researching complex issues, analysing information and providing practical advice that helps others make informed decisions. You can work through legislation, governance requirements and policy issues without making them more complicated than they need to be, and you know that great advice is both technically sound and practical to apply.
You don't need to know everything about Local Government governance on day one. If you've worked in governance, compliance, legal, regulatory or policy environments and enjoy helping people solve complex problems, we'll help you build your Local Government knowledge.
To be successful in this role, you'll have:
- An understanding of legislative and regulatory frameworks and how they are applied in practice.
- Experience researching, interpreting and applying legislation, regulation or governance requirements.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to turn complex information into practical advice.
- The ability to build relationships and work confidently with a diverse range of stakeholders.
- Strong organisational skills, sound judgement and a collaborative, member-focused approach.
- The ability and willingness to deliver training, workshops or presentations.
You'll also be willing to travel occasionally to visit regional members, with some out-of-hours work required from time to time.
