Safety Lead – Distribution Centre

The Opportunity

We are currently recruiting for an experienced Safety Lead to join a large, highly automated distribution centre in Truganina, Melbourne. This is a fantastic chance for a hands‑on safety skilled who enjoys working closely with Operations and wants to take ownership of safety within a complex, high‑risk logistics environment. The site supports major retail operations and has approximately 300 employees, operating across a 24/7, three‑shift environment. The successful candidate will be the key Safety representative on site, partnering closely with operational leaders to identify risk, drive safety improvement and maintain a strong safety culture.

The Site & Setting

This is a highly automated distribution centre combining advanced technology with traditional warehouse operations.

- Goods‑to‑Person automation and robotics
- Automated product picking and movement
- Bulk storage
- High‑rise picking
- Manual put‑away and picking
- Forklifts and mobile plant
- Material Handling Equipment (MHE)
- Stock pickers
- Pedestrian and MHE interaction
- High‑volume logistics operations

This is a genuinely operational safety role, requiring someone who is comfortable being close to the floor, understanding how the operation works and identifying practical solutions to manage risk.

About the Role

As Safety Lead, you will take ownership of safety across the distribution centre and work closely with Operations to ensure safety remains embedded within day‑to‑day decision making.

- Lead and manage safety across the distribution centre
- Build strong relationships with operational leaders and key stakeholders
- Provide practical safety advice and support across the site
- Identify, assess and manage operational risks
- Manage risks associated with MHE, forklifts and pedestrian interaction




- Support incident investigation and management
- Drive safety initiatives and continuous improvement
- Develop and maintain a strong safety culture
- Partner with Operations to implement practical risk controls
- Provide visible safety leadership across the site
- Ensure appropriate safety standards are maintained within a fast‑paced operational environment

You will need to be confident working in an environment where operational requirements and safety priorities can sometimes compete, and be able to influence stakeholders without compromising safety standards.

What We’re Looking For

We are particularly interested in Safety professionals with experience in distribution centres, warehousing, logistics or other high‑risk operational environments.

Strong experience in one or more of the following would be highly regarded.

- Distribution centres
- Warehousing
- Transport & logistics
- FMCG
- Manufacturing
- High‑risk operational environments
- Automated logistics environments
- Machinery and MHE operations

You should have a strong understanding of practical operational risks, particularly around machinery, mobile plant, MHE, forklifts and pedestrian interaction.

Candidates from other high‑risk industries may also be considered where they have significant exposure to machinery and complex operational environments.

You’ll be a strong fit if you are:

- A confident and hands‑on Safety professional
- Comfortable working closely with Operations
- Experienced in high‑risk operational environments




- Strong at stakeholder engagement and influencing
- Able to work autonomously
- Commercial and practical in your approach to safety
- Comfortable operating in a fast‑paced environment
- Able to quickly understand operational risks and implement practical controls

Purely retail‑based safety experience without significant exposure to high‑risk operational environments is unlikely to be suitable for this role.

Working Arrangements

- Location: Truganina, Melbourne VIC
- Employment: Permanent
- Start: ASAP
- Hours: Predominantly day shift
- Weekend work: No regular Saturday requirement
- Peak periods: Some weekend work may be required during Christmas peak operations
- On‑call expectation: Availability to respond should a significant incident occur outside normal working hours

Contract Opportunity

An immediate contract opportunity may also be available for the right candidate while the permanent recruitment process is underway.

The contract chance would suit an experienced Safety professional with solid:

- DC / warehouse experience
- Logistics or transport experience
- FMCG or manufacturing experience
- MHE and machinery exposure
- High‑risk operational experience

There may also be an opportunity for the successful contractor to transition into the permanent position if the fit is right for both parties.
