What we do

The Infrastructure and Operations Division is part of the Technology and Digital Programs Group, and is responsible for provisioning, supporting, operating and managing the agency’s ICT environment that underpins applications supporting our business.

The Application Infrastructure branch is responsible for the provisioning and support of underlying applications and databases that support the agency’s critical services. This includes performing ongoing maintenance to ensure vendor support and stability, providing incident investigation and performance analysis using advanced monitoring solutions.

About the role

Database Administrators are proficient with system databases, data elements, application software, and other tool sets to develop enterprise data solutions. They use their extensive experience and an expert level of proficiency across a number of contemporary ICT systems, servers, coding languages and databases.

APS6 - Senior Database Administrators

Senior Database Administrators are responsible for the administration, maintenance and optimisation of enterprise database environments that support critical business services. They provide technical expertise to ensure database systems are secure, reliable and fit for purpose, while managing competing priorities and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives. Working under limited direction, they apply sound judgement to resolve complex technical issues, support service delivery outcomes and develop team capability.

EL1 - Database Administrator Expert

Database Administrator Experts provide technical leadership and strategic direction for enterprise database services across complex ICT environments. They lead the development of database governance, security and performance frameworks,



drive innovation and continuous improvement, and provide expert advice to stakeholders. Operating with a high degree of independence, they are responsible for building organisational capability, managing risks and ensuring database services align with agency priorities and long-term business outcomes.

The key duties of the position include:

APS 6 Senior Database Administrator

- Create and maintain database structures, objects and configurations in accordance with approved standards and change management processes.
- Develop and implement database security controls to ensure the protection of agency data assetsAbility to establish work priorities, manage competing demands and achieve quality outcomes.
- Manage data loading, maintenance, distribution and lifecycle activities to support business operations.
- Monitor, analyse and optimise database performance, capacity and availability.
- Coordinate backup, recovery and disaster recovery activities to maintain service resilience.
- Investigate database incidents and security breaches, applying remedial actions to minimise operational impacts.
- Develop and contribute to database administration standards, processes and automation initiatives.
- Support and mentor team members, manage workflows, and provide technical advice to stakeholders.

EL1 Senior Database Administrator Expert

- Provide expert database administration advice to technical specialists, stakeholders and business areas.
- Lead the installation, upgrade and optimisation of enterprise database environments.
- Authorise and oversee database security controls and access management frameworks.
- Direct database performance, availability, backup, recovery and disaster recovery strategies.
- Lead investigations into database incidents and security breaches, implementing strategic remediation activities.
- Develop and govern database standards, security measures, frameworks and best practices.
- Drive automation initiatives and continuous improvement activities to enhance operational efficiency.
- Lead, mentor and develop staff capability, succession planning and workforce performance.

Eligibility

Essential Requirements:

- Security Clearance level required: Negative Vetting Level 1 (or ability to obtain and maintain).

Desirable Qualifications:





- Knowledge and understanding of enterprise scale database design and maintenance.
- Knowledge of M204 or similar enterprise scale database operations and support. Ability to liaise with applications teams to design optimal database solutions
- Knowledge of Db2 z/OS database operations and support, including IMS, SQL and access path optimisation.

In accordance with section 22(6) of the Public Service Act 1999, Services Australia requires applicants to be Australian citizens to be eligible for employment with Services Australia.

An applicant’s suitability for employment with the agency will be assessed through a pre-employment screening process. This process includes but is not limited to a national police history check, referee checks, code of conduct check and an employment history integrity check.

Some positions within Services Australia may be required to work in settings where mandatory vaccinations are required. Staff in such positions will need to demonstrate that they meet the vaccination requirements or have a relevant exemption.
