General Manager – Business Growth & Organisational Development
A unique opportunity to help shape the next stage of a successful and growing business
Our client is an established and highly regarded business operating within a specialised sector of the transport industry. For more than 13 years, the business has achieved consistent year-on-year growth, met its strategic targets and built a strong reputation within its market.
That growth has been supported by a loyal and capable team who have progressively taken on broader responsibilities as the business has evolved. This has created a wealth of operational knowledge within the organisation and provided opportunities for employees to develop into highly valued, multi-skilled team members.
With continued growth and a strong forward workload, the business has reached an exciting point in its development. It is now looking to strengthen its organisational structure, formalise responsibilities and introduce contemporary management practices that will support the business and its people for the next stage of its journey.
The Prospect
We are seeking an experienced General Manager / Business Manager to work closely with the Business Owner initially to review the existing organisational structure, identify opportunities for improvement and help implement an appropriate structure for a modern, growing business.
This is not simply a position focused on maintaining the status quo. It is an opportunity for an experienced business leader to understand an established operation, identify what works, determine where greater structure and accountability are required, and then help implement meaningful change.
The successful candidate will initially be responsible for:
Undertaking a comprehensive organisational and operational gap analysis.
Reviewing current reporting lines, roles and responsibilities.
Identifying opportunities to improve accountability, efficiency and communication.
Developing recommendations for an updated organisational structure.
Working with the Business Owner to implement approved changes.
Supporting existing employees through changes to responsibilities and reporting structures.
Establishing clearer management processes, performance expectations and communication pathways.
Once the organisational review and implementation phase is established, the role will develop into a broader General Manager position with responsibility across key areas of the business.
Key Areas of Responsibility
Finance & Commercial Management
Monitor actual performance against budgets and forecasts.
Assist with financial planning and business decision-making.
Oversee cost control, procurement and expenditure.
Develop appropriate asset renewal and replacement strategies.
Identify opportunities to improve operational and financial efficiency.
Quality Assurance, Compliance & Workplace Safety
Ensure policies and procedures reflect contemporary best practice and applicable industry requirements.
Maintain appropriate reporting, recording and audit processes.
Support the ongoing management of existing quality accreditations.
Identify opportunities to strengthen quality, compliance and risk-management systems.
Develop and implement contemporary employee policies and practices consistent with an employer-of-choice culture.
Leadership & People Development
Provide leadership and mentoring to managers and emerging leaders.
Establish clear performance standards and accountability.
Encourage professional development, training and self-development across the team.
Act as an effective bridge between employees and the Business Owner.
Establish regular, open and effective communication throughout the organisation.
Help create an environment where employees understand expectations and have the opportunity to perform at their best.
Human Resources
Establish clear and consistent employee communication processes.
Support managers in addressing workplace issues promptly and appropriately.
Develop clear performance-management processes and expectations.
Help build a positive, accountable and contemporary workplace culture.
Sales, Marketing & Stakeholder Engagement
Build upon the organisation's existing strengths and reputation.
Identify opportunities to further develop the business's brand and community presence.
Develop appropriate community involvement and sponsorship initiatives.
Modernise marketing and promotional material.
Assist with tenders, submissions and new business opportunities.
Maintain strong relationships with customers and key stakeholders.
Identify opportunities to support sustainable future growth.
About You
We are looking for a commercially minded and people-focused leader who enjoys working in an environment where there is an opportunity to make a genuine difference.
You may currently be working as a General Manager, Operations Manager, Business Manager, Commercial Manager or senior functional leader and be ready to take on a broader remit.
Importantly,
you do not need to be an expert in the technical or operational aspects of the transport industry.
The business operates in a specialised sector with some unique operational requirements, and technical knowledge can be developed. What is more important is your ability to understand a business, ask the right questions, identify gaps, establish appropriate structure and systems, and bring people with you through change.
You will ideally bring:
Demonstrated experience in a senior management or general management role.
Strong commercial and financial understanding.
Experience developing people, managers and organisational capability.
A practical approach to HR, compliance, quality and risk.
Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
The confidence to make decisions and address issues constructively.
Experience implementing organisational change or improving business processes.
A collaborative and pragmatic leadership style.
The ability to work effectively with an owner-led business.
A genuine interest in developing people and building organisational capability.
Why This Role?
This is an opportunity to join a successful established business at an important stage of its development.
The business has already demonstrated its ability to grow. The challenge now is to build the structure, leadership capability, systems and culture that will allow that growth to continue sustainably.
For the right person, this role offers the chance to:
Work directly with the Business Owner and have genuine influence over the future direction of the business.
Shape and implement a new organisational structure.
Develop existing employees and future leaders.
Introduce contemporary management practices and systems.
Have broad exposure across finance, people, quality, compliance, sales and operations.
Help shape the culture and working environment of an established business.
Play a significant role in preparing the organisation for its next phase of growth.
The Opportunity Ahead
With strong forecast workloads and positive long-term prospects for the sector, the business is well positioned for its next stage of development.
This position will suit someone who enjoys building rather than simply managing -someone who can look at an established business objectively, recognise its strengths, identify opportunities for improvement and then work collaboratively with its people to make those improvements happen.
If you are an experienced business leader looking for an opportunity where your contribution can have a genuine and lasting impact, we would welcome your interest.
