The organisation

The Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) is an independent statutory body dedicated to enhancing Australia’s future productivity and living standards. By contributing to a decarbonising, affordable, and reliable energy system, the AEMC plays a key role in shaping the National Electricity Market, the natural gas market, and related retail markets. The Commission is also a trusted advisor to the Energy and Climate Change Ministerial Council, providing strategic guidance on energy issues.

The opportunity

The Legal Counsel will play an important role in supporting the AEMC’s regulatory and policy work. This is a varied position offering exposure to complex legal matters and the opportunity to contribute to rule changes and reviews shaping Australia’s energy markets.

You will:

- Provide practical legal advice across energy regulation, policy and organisational matters.
- Support rule changes and reviews, including drafting amendments to the national energy rules.
- Work with policy teams to consider legal implications and develop sound regulatory outcomes.
- Collaborate with lawyers, Commissioners and stakeholders across complex and high-impact projects.

About you

You will be an admitted lawyer with approximately 3–5 years post-admission experience, with an interest in regulation, policy and the energy sector.

- Experience in regulatory, administrative, transactional or energy-related law.
- Strong legal analysis and communication skills.




- An ability to work collaboratively with legal and non-legal stakeholders.
- A genuine interest in regulation, policy and the energy sector.
- Energy or broader regulated industry experience will be highly regarded.
