Role

The assistant principal reports directly to the principal.

Assistant principals have a primary responsibility for the management of significant areas or functions within the school to ensure the effective development, provision and evaluation of the school's education program. In exercising the responsibility, assistant principals will have the authority to make all significant decisions relating to the program, budget and staff relating to their area of designated responsibility within the framework of the school's strategic plan, policies and budget.Assistant principals will contribute to the overall management of the school through involvement in policy formulation and decision making.

The management of significant school program or functional areas in schools involve assistant principals in the analysis of the needs of students and the translation of state educational policy and frameworks into appropriate education programs to meet the needs of all students.

Typically assistant principals will be responsible for the effective use of the teaching staff and program budget of a defined area of the school's operation and for the oversight and leadership of the educational programs provided utilising these resources.

Responsibilities

Typically, assistant principals perform one or more of the following functions:

- supervision and coordination of the work of senior curriculum or level coordinators;
- allocation of budgets, positions of responsibility and other resources within the area of responsibility;
- supervision of the delivery of teaching programs;
- management of programs to improve the knowledge and experience of staff;
- responsibility for general discipline matters beyond the management of classroom teachers and year level coordinators;
- contribute to the overall management of the school;

Role responsibilities:

- Member of the Principal Class Team and School Improvement Team working to effectively implement the year by year growth of the school
- Leading the areas of responsibility to achieve set targets of the AIP / SP
- Modelling practice which includes learning walks, high visibility, high expectations of learning and behaviour
- Performance and development of relevant staff
- A member of the team developing and delivering Professional Learning to staff, including developing PLCs
- Lead and support teachers to ensure the Positive Classroom Management Strategies are incorporated into Instructional Practice through the School's Instructional Model and the VTLM
- Leading the implementation of School Wide Positive Behaviour Supports
- Ensuring Child Safety Standards are followed within the school

Other areas of responsibility include:

- Overseeing the school calendar, ensuring requirements for excursions, camps and other school events are in place and are followed
- identifying defects and communicating with the builders and project managers and ensuring that the defects are finalised
- overseeing school facility processes, such as programming doors, heating/cooling, use of CCTV
- overseeing maintenance and supervising our maintenance and grounds person
- completing Emergency Management and Occupational, Health and Safety requirements
- Daily Organising each day
- Other duties as directed by the principal

Qualification Requirements

To be eligible for employment, transfer or promotion in the principal or teacher class:

- The person must have provisional or full registration approved by the Victorian Institute of Teaching; and
- if the person completed an Australian postgraduate level initial teaching program or course of study on or after 1 January 2024, they must demonstrate that they have satisfactorily completed a postgraduate level accredited initial teacher education program that has been accredited by an Australian State or Territory Teacher Regulatory Authority as satisfying the requirements of the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership 'Accreditation of initial teacher education programs in Australia: Standards and Procedures'; and
- a person who graduated from a Victorian Initial Teacher Education (ITE) program after 1 July 2016 must also demonstrate that they have passed the literacy and numeracy test for initial teacher education (LANTITE) requirements (this condition is satisfied where the LANTITE requirement is part of the Victorian ITE program completed by the person).

Wulerrp Secondary College, opened at the end of January in 2025 to 230 Year 7 students and we have a similar enrolment for Year 7 in 2026. Each year we will add an additional year levelwith an expected enrolment of 1600 in 2030 when Year 12 students begin.

The school is approximately 55 kilometres from Melbourne based in an area of rapidly growing new housing estates incorporating green spaces.Our school grounds are close to planned parklands and sporting facilities, and we are surrounded by a supportive community. Most students who attend our school live locally and tend to be dropped off by parents, walk or ride their bike to school.

We have brand new buildings: Junior School Building, Library, STEM Centre and Gymnasium with state-of-the-art facilities. Stage 2 building of the Senior School will take place in 2027.

Our school is culturally diverse with 60% of students speaking a language other than English at home, the most common languages being Punjabi and Sinhalese. We are proud to know that our school community is diverse and inclusive; a thriving and harmonious school where all belong. We provide a nurturing and challenging environment to continue to develop students' passion for learning, empowering them to be life-long learners to achieve their best in their academic, social/emotional and vocational learning.

In 2026 we will have approximately 55 staff members, 32 teaching staff, 18 education support staff, wellbeing staff and school leadership staff. We have a very supportive culture where staff work collaboratively to document curriculum and assessment with a collective focus on student learning. We are developing our school's Instructional Model and Instructional Practice based on the department's Victorian Teaching and Learning Model.

We focus on providing opportunities for our staff to develop their leadership capabilities. As we grow in numbers and year levels, more leadership positions will become available in the school. We have a mentorship program for graduates and coaching will be available to all staff.
