Job Description
Senior Accountant - Become More Than a Number Cruncher
n
You've learnt how to prepare the numbers. Now, where do you want your career to take you?
n
If you have around four years' experience in public practice, chances are you've developed a solid grounding in financial statements, tax returns and compliance.
n
But perhaps you're starting to wonder what comes next.
n
At Toyne Accountants, we're looking for a motivated Senior Accountant who wants the opportunity to become more than a technically capable accountant.
n
We want someone who has the ambition to develop their career towards becoming a confident client adviser and, ultimately, an Accounting Manager.
n
We'll provide the opportunity and development. What you do with it will be up to you.
n
First, show us what you can do
n
We don't believe in promising promotions simply because someone has been here for a certain period of time.
n
Initially, your role will focus on the traditional areas of public practice accounting, including:
n
n
- Preparation of financial statements
n
- Preparation of income tax returns
n
- General taxation and compliance work
n
- Working with Xero and other client accounting information
n
- Assisting with client queries and accounting matters
n
n
This gives you the opportunity to demonstrate your technical ability, reliability, initiative and capacity to take responsibility for your work.
n
Then things start to get more interesting.
n
Once we're confident in your abilities, we'll start investing in developing the skills that can take your career to another level.
n
Become the accountant clients actually want to talk to
n
Being a great accountant requires more than being technically good with numbers.
n
We'll help you develop your ability to sit across the table from a business owner, understand what's happening in their business and have a meaningful conversation about what they could do next.
n
Your development will progressively include:
n
n
- Building and managing client relationships
n
- Developing your communication and presentation skills
n
- Tax planning and proactive client advice
n
- Analysing business financial performance
n
- Identifying opportunities to improve profitability and cash flow
n
- Developing practical business advisory skills
n
- Taking increasing responsibility for clients
n
- Developing the leadership and management skills required to manage a portfolio and eventually lead others
n
n
The objective is simple:
n
How quickly you progress along that path will depend largely on you.
n
Who are Toyne Accountants?
n
We are a progressive Newcastle-based accounting firm with a team of 18 people.
n
We provide traditional accounting and taxation services, but we also believe there is a significant opportunity for accountants to provide much more value to their clients.
n
Our focus is increasingly on helping business owners understand their numbers, improve their businesses and make better financial decisions.
n
We're looking for someone who wants to be part of that future.
n
This is a full-time, office-based position in Newcastle. We believe working closely with experienced accountants, managers and clients is an important part of developing the skills we're looking to build.
n
Who are we looking for?
n
We're not expecting the finished product.
n
In fact, we'd prefer to find someone with potential who is hungry for the opportunity to develop.
n
Ideally, you'll have:
n
n
- Around 4 years' Australian public practice accounting experience
n
- Strong financial statement and income tax preparation skills
n
- Experience with Xero
n
- A good understanding of Australian taxation and compliance requirements
n
- Ideally commenced, or be working towards, CA or CPA qualifications
n
- Good written and verbal communication skills
n
- A willingness to learn and accept greater responsibility
n
n
But beyond the CV, we're looking for something else.
n
Ambition.
n
We want someone who wants to improve, wants more responsibility, enjoys dealing with people and can see themselves eventually managing client relationships rather than spending their entire career simply preparing the numbers.
n
What will you get in return?
n
You'll receive an attractive salary package commensurate with your ability and experience, together with something potentially much more valuable – an prospect to accelerate your career.
n
We'll provide:
n
n
- Hands-on training and mentoring
n
- A genuine pathway towards management
n
- Increasing client contact as you demonstrate your capabilities
n
- Training in business advisory and commercial skills
n
- Exposure to business owners and their real-world challenges
n
- Opportunities to take increasing ownership of client relationships
n
- A supportive team of 18 people
n
- The opportunity to grow with a progressive Newcastle accounting firm
n
n
We won't promise you a management title after an arbitrary number of months.
n
What we will promise is the opportunity to earn it.
n
Where do you want to be in three years?
n
Still preparing the same financial statements and tax returns?
n
Or sitting across the table from your own clients, helping them make better business decisions and building towards a management position?
n
If it's the second option, we'd like to meet you.
