BHS Equipment is looking for an experienced

Leading Hand Heavy Diesel Mechanic

to join our growing team and take a key role in the day-to-day operation and development of our workshop.

This position is suited to an experienced Heavy Diesel Mechanic who is ready to step into a leadership role but

doesn’t want to completely step away from the tools .

The role is approximately

50% hands-on mechanical work and 50% workshop coordination and administration . You’ll work alongside the team while also helping manage jobs, customers, parts, quoting and the overall workshop workflow.

We’re looking for someone who can lead from the front, make decisions, support the mechanics around them and help us continue building a productive and efficient workshop.

The Role As Leading Hand, you’ll take responsibility for helping keep the workshop organised, productive and moving forward.

Your responsibilities will include:

Leading, supporting and working alongside the workshop team

Remaining hands-on with approximately 50% of your time on the tools

Coordinating and allocating workshop jobs

Managing workshop workflow and priorities

Ordering parts, materials and equipment

Preparing quotes and repair estimates

Liaising directly with customers

Providing customers with job updates and managing their requirements

Reviewing job cards, labour hours and parts used

Monitoring jobs to ensure they remain productive and on track

Diagnosing and assisting with more complex mechanical faults

Checking completed work and maintaining high workmanship standards

Supporting and mentoring mechanics and apprentices

Maintaining strong safety and housekeeping standards

Working closely with management to improve workshop systems, productivity and profitability

This isn't a role where you'll sit behind a desk all day. We want someone who is prepared to

pick up the tools when required,



help the team solve problems and lead by example.

About You To be successful in this role, you'll ideally have:

Trade qualification as a Diesel / Heavy Diesel Mechanic

Strong experience with trucks, trailers and heavy diesel equipment

Previous Leading Hand, Foreman or supervisory experience

Strong mechanical diagnostic and fault-finding ability

Excellent communication and customer service skills

Good computer and administration skills

Experience preparing quotes and estimating mechanical repairs

An understanding of labour, parts and job costing

Strong organisational and time-management skills

The ability to prioritise multiple jobs in a busy workshop

A proactive approach to solving problems

The confidence to make decisions and take ownership

The ability to lead a team while remaining hands-on

A strong commitment to quality, safety and getting the job done properly

Most importantly, we're looking for someone who

takes ownership of the workshop rather than waiting to be told what needs to happen next.

Hours This is a busy, fast-paced workshop environment.

Working days can be

up to 10 hours , with the potential for

12-hour days during particularly busy periods .

Weekend availability is highly desirable when workload or customer requirements demand it.
