Sharp Air-conditioning and Refrigeration
Yangebup
Air Conditioning Mechanic / 3rd–4th Year Apprentice
Sharp Air-conditioning & Refrigeration | Yangebup, WA
First things first...
I'm an air-conditioning mechanic, not a copywriter. So yes, I've had a bit of help from AI putting this job ad together.
The words might be polished, but everything I'm about to tell you about our business and our team is from me.
I'm Jarrad, the owner of Sharp Air-conditioning & Refrigeration.
I'm still on the tools. I still work alongside the boys/girl. I still get the phone call when a job goes sideways, and I'm still the person you'll probably find helping finish a job when everyone's had a massive day.
And I'm looking for another person to join our crew.
I'm not trying to build the biggest air-conditioning company in Perth.
We've experienced plenty of growth over the years, but I realised something along the way: Bigger doesn't always mean better.
Around six months ago, I made the conscious decision to build a smaller, stronger team and get back to what I actually enjoy about running this business:
Good people. Quality work. Looking after each other. And actually enjoying coming to work.
We're still ambitious and we're still growing — we're just not interested in growing for the sake of being bigger.
I'd rather have a smaller crew of great people who know each other, help each other out and take pride in what we do than a fleet of vans driven by people who barely know each other's names.
We want to stay small enough to care, but big enough to give our people somewhere to go.
That's the balance I'm trying to build at Sharp.
Let's talk about money.
I'm probably not going to be the highest-paying employer you find on SEEK. I've seen the ads offering $60, $65+ an hour, sign-on bonuses, birthday leave and just about everything else.
If your only goal is finding the highest hourly rate advertised, that's completely fair — but we're probably not going to be the right company for you. That does not mean you can't earn more, just that we want to see what you can do before you are on top dollar.
For a qualified technician, we're looking at up to around $55 per hour depending on experience and capability, along with a Toyota HiAce van you can take home, fuel, usual inclusions you'd expect.
For a 3rd or 4th Year Apprentice, we'll offer a competitive rate based on where you're at in your apprenticeship/TAFE and; more importantly, your capability.
Where I think we can compete with anyone is what your working week actually feels like.
Because an extra few dollars an hour doesn't mean much if you dread waking up and coming into work.
I've even seen companies advertising your birthday off.
I could promise you that too. But I'd rather build a workplace where you actually don't mind coming in on your birthday because you're spending it with a bunch of people you genuinely get along with.
Don't worry, we'll probably cook you breakfast and have it with the team.
And yes... you can still take your birthday off if you really want to.
The point is, I don't think culture is something you create by adding another perk to the bottom of a SEEK ad.
It's how people treat each other every day.
If one of our guys is having a nightmare of a job and someone else finishes early, we help them out.
If an apprentice doesn't know something, I want them to pick up the phone and ask rather than being afraid they'll look stupid.
If we've had a massive week, everyone has put in and there's a way we can make someone's day easier, we do it.
Nobody gets left hanging.
We're a genuinely small, tight-knit crew.
You'll know everyone in the business. You'll know the office team. You'll know the apprentices. You'll know the technicians.
And you'll definitely know me, because there's a pretty positive chance I'll be standing next to you with a set of gauges at some point.
I'm still actively involved in the day-to-day running of Sharp and regularly work on the tools alongside the team.
If you've got an idea about how we could do something better, you don't need to run it through three supervisors and a manager.
Come and tell me.
I don't always promise I'll agree with you, but I'll listen.
That's the sort of business I want Sharp to remain.
We actually spend time together too.
I'm not going to tell you we're a "family" because every second job ad on SEEK seems to say that. But the reality is we're a pretty close group and everyone genuinely gets along.
We have regular team breakfasts, quarterly social events and a big Christmas party every year.
We have a laugh. We give each other plenty of s***. We celebrate the wins.
But nobody is expected to spend every waking hour with their workmates either.
You've got a life outside of work, and I think that's important too.
So, what will you actually be doing?
Here's something you'll probably be happy to hear.
Our work is predominantly
Residential Service / Maintenance / Repairs / Changeovers.
And we know how much everyone hates ducted installations...
So we subcontract them all out.
No spending your summer crawling through a 55°C roof space dragging duct around wondering where your life went wrong. You'll mainly be fault finding, servicing, repairing and replacing air-conditioning systems — the sort of work where you actually get to use your trade.
Some days you'll work independently. Other days you'll be alongside another technician, an apprentice or me.
We've also got an office team behind the guys in the field, so the aim is for our technicians to spend their time being technicians, rather than trying to run the office from the driver's seat of a van.
Where can this job take you?
This is a big one for me. I don't want someone joining Sharp and automatically doing exactly the same job five years from now.
Unless that's what you want.
If you're a 3rd or 4th Year Apprentice, I don't just want to get you signed off.
I want to help turn you into a genuinely good, confident refrigeration mechanic who can diagnose problems, deal with customers, run jobs and eventually help teach the next apprentice coming through.
If you're already qualified and want more responsibility, there will be opportunities as the business grows.
That could mean becoming a Senior Technician, Leading Hand or Supervisor, helping develop the younger guys, taking ownership of larger jobs or eventually moving partly or completely off the tools.
I'm not going to promise you a fancy job title in 12 months just to get you through the door.
But good people will get opportunities here.
And if you love being on the tools and want to stay there, that's completely fine too.
That's exactly what I mean when I say:
Small enough to care, but big enough to give our people somewhere to go.
What you'll get from us
For the right person, you'll get:
- Up to approximately $55/hr for a qualified technician, depending on experience and capability
- Competitive rates for 3rd/4th Year Apprentices
- Take-home Toyota HiAce van
- Fuel card
- Uniforms and required equipment
- Full-time, stable employment
- Predominantly service, maintenance, repair and changeover work
- No ducted installs — we subcontract them out
- Variety across all aspects of residential work
- Support from an experienced field and office team
- Genuine opportunities to progress as Sharp grows
- Regular team breakfasts
- Quarterly social events
- A Christmas party that we probably spend too much money on
- An owner who's still on the tools
- A crew that actually helps each other out
- And hopefully somewhere you genuinely enjoy coming to work
Who am I looking for?
I'm happy to speak with either a qualified Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Mechanic or a strong 3rd/4th Year Apprentice. I'm probably more interested in the person than the résumé.
You don't need to know absolutely everything. None of us do.
But I do want someone who:
- Takes pride in their workmanship
- Turns up when they say they will
- Communicates properly with customers
- Looks after their van, tools and equipment
- Is willing to learn
- Helps the person beside them
- Can work independently when needed
- Can have a laugh
- Doesn't cut corners
- Takes ownership of what they do
- Wants to become part of the crew rather than simply collect a payslip
And in return, you should expect the same standards from us.
Sound like your sort of crew?
To be honest, I don't even care if you send me your resume, give me a call and let's have a chat first. You don't need to write a corporate cover letter telling us you're a "highly motivated individual who works well independently and as part of a team."
Just tell us a little about yourself — and what animal you genuinely think you could beat in a fight and why.
All applications will be treated confidentially. If you're currently working for another air-conditioning company, I understand the industry is small and your application stays between us.
