About us

Specialist Medical Services Group (SMSG) runs three general practices in Inner West & St George/Sutherland Sydney: Earlwood Medical Centre, Sans Souci Doctors and Bangor Medical Centre. The group also includes Excelsia Specialists Centre, Aurora Women & Babies Health, Clarion Skin Cancer Clinic and Kids' Dr. SMSG has previously been certified as a Great Place to Work.

Patient Support Officers run our front desks. It's a busy, varied role, and when it's done well every patient notices.

The job

n

n
- Greet patients, check them in and keep the waiting room moving, including letting people know when a GP is running behind.
n
- Answer the phones and book appointments in Best Practice, matching each patient to the right practitioner, appointment type and length.
n
- Process bulk-billed, Medicare and private payments, and issue receipts.
n
- Recognise the patient who can't wait (chest pain, trouble breathing, heavy bleeding) and get them to a nurse straight away.
n
- Handle calls and correspondence from hospitals, pathology, pharmacies and referring doctors.
n
- Scan and file results and letters, and keep patient records accurate and up to date.
n
- Open and close the centre, restock supplies, and keep reception and the waiting room clean and welcoming.

What you get

- Award rate to start, experience considered.



Pay starts at $33.71 per hour on weekdays and $47.20 per hour on Saturdays (Health Professionals and Support Services Award, Level 1, including the 25% casual loading), plus 12% super, paid fortnightly. We take relevant experience into account when assessing applications.

- Real training. Your first shift is spent with a buddy: Best Practice training, a guided walkthrough of bookings, billing and phones, then supervised time at the desk. Weeks one and two cover recalls, referrals, inbox management and end-of-day procedures. You won't be left alone at the desk, or asked to bill unsupervised, until you've been trained.

- Predictable rosters. The roster is posted at least two weeks ahead, with seven days' notice of changes. Shifts are a minimum of 3 hours.
n
- Evenings and Sundays free. Our centres close at 6:30pm-7:00pm on weekdays and are closed on Sundays.

- Uniform top supplied.

- Backup when patients cross the line. Our policy is clear: we don't tolerate abuse. You can tell a patient their behaviour isn't acceptable, and senior staff will back you up.

What you need

n

n
- Customer service experience. Retail, hospitality, call centres and healthcare all count.
n
- Clear, calm communication on the phone and at the desk.
n
- Accuracy. You check names, dates of birth and Medicare numbers twice.
n
- The ability to juggle a ringing phone, a patient at the desk and a queue without losing track.
n
- Discretion. Patient information stays confidential.
n
- The right to work in Australia, plus a National Police Check and a Working with Children Check, or the willingness to get them.

Nice to have

n

n
- Medical reception experience, especially Best Practice and Medicare billing
n
- A language other than English
n
- Availability across all three centres, and on Saturdays at Earlwood
n
- A driver's licence or car. If you don't drive, public transport is fine as long as you can get to the centres.
