About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Dog Handler or Trainer to join our pet care team.

The role involves assessing dogs’ behaviour, teaching obedience and socialisation skills, addressing behavioural problems, and delivering structured training programs suited to each dog’s needs. The successful candidate will also provide guidance to dog owners and maintain accurate training and progress records.

Key Responsibilities

● Assess each dog’s temperament, behaviour, training needs and suitability for individual or group training.

● Develop individual training plans based on identified behavioural issues and the owner’s objectives.

● Teach dogs to respond to verbal commands, hand signals and other non-verbal instructions.

● Conduct obedience training covering recall, lead walking, sitting, staying, waiting and appropriate social behaviour.

● Address behavioural problems such as aggression, excessive barking, anxiety, jumping, pulling and poor socialisation.

● Conduct individual and group training sessions in a controlled and safe environment.

● Use positive reinforcement and appropriate training techniques suited to each dog’s temperament and progress.

● Train and supervise dogs during socialisation, exercise and enrichment activities.

● Monitor dogs’ behaviour throughout training and adjust training methods when required.

● Prepare session notes,



behavioural observations and progress reports for each dog.

● Demonstrate training techniques to dog owners and provide instructions for continued training at home.

● Identify signs of stress, fear, illness or injury and take appropriate action to protect the dog’s welfare.

● Safely handle, restrain and transfer dogs of different sizes, breeds and temperaments.

● Maintain training equipment and ensure training areas remain clean, secure and safe.

● Follow animal welfare, workplace health and safety, hygiene and incident-reporting procedures.

Qualifications and Experience

● Previous experience working as a Dog Handler, Dog Trainer or in a closely related professional role.

● Practical experience assessing canine temperament and behavioural issues.

● Experience conducting obedience, socialisation and behaviour-modification training.

● Experience safely handling dogs of different breeds, sizes and behavioural profiles.

● Knowledge of positive reinforcement and reward-based dog-training methods.

● Understanding of canine body language, animal welfare and safe handling requirements.

Skills

● Strong dog-handling and canine-training skills.

● Ability to identify behavioural problems and prepare suitable training plans.

● Ability to deliver individual and group training sessions.

● Sound understanding of canine behaviour, communication and learning principles.

● Ability to communicate training methods clearly to dog owners.

Pay: $40.20 per hour

Expected hours: 38.0 per week
