About the role
This is a hands-on teaching role with real student impact. You plan and deliver live online General English classes to international adult learners, track progress against the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and help students reach their English proficiency and pathway goals. You report to the ELICOS Academic Manager, so your read on students, levels and resources reaches the people who set the timetable.
Hours: Casual, hourly rate. Classes are rostered across weekdays and weeknights based on the timetable and student numbers.
What you will do
Teaching and delivery
- Plan and deliver live online General English classes across Common European Framework levels A1 to B2
- Sequence lessons against the course outline and weekly scheme of work
- Balance speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary in each session
- Adjust pace, task difficulty and grouping for mixed-ability classes
- Keep the virtual classroom active with pair work, breakout rooms and interactive tasks
Online platforms and resources
- Use the learning management system, video conferencing tools and digital resources with confidence
- Prepare and upload materials, activities and recordings ahead of each class
- Adapt print-based resources for online delivery
- Resolve basic access and audio issues quickly so teaching time is protected
- Recommend resource and content improvements to the Learning Team
Assessment and feedback
- Assess speaking, listening, reading and writing against course benchmarks
- Mark progress tests, placement tasks and assessments within agreed timeframes
- Give constructive written and verbal feedback students act on
- Record results, attendance and evidence accurately in the student management system
- Flag students at risk of missing level outcomes early, with evidence
Student support and participation
- Monitor participation and attendance each session and follow up absences
- Identify students needing extra learning support and refer them to student services
- Support students moving from General English into English for Academic Purposes or vocational pathways
- Respond to student questions and messages within agreed service standards
- Build a respectful, inclusive classroom where learners from every background contribute
Compliance and quality
- Meet National Code and ELICOS Standards obligations for attendance, course progress and record keeping
- Keep lesson plans, class records and assessment evidence audit ready
- Report attendance and progress concerns in line with policy
- Protect student information in line with privacy and organisational requirements
Team and professional development
- Take part in staff meetings, assessment moderation and professional development activities
- Share teaching practice, resources and student insights with colleagues
- Contribute to course review and continuous improvement
- Participate in classroom observation and act on feedback
Skills and experience required
- Australian undergraduate degree or equivalent
- Recognised postgraduate Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages qualification, such as the Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults or Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults
- Proven experience teaching English online, preferably to international adult learners in an English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students setting
- Experience teaching General English across Common European Framework levels A1 to B2
- Native and first-language English speaker with excellent written and spoken communication
- Solid intercultural communication and teamwork skills
- Valid Australian working rights
Pay: $60.00 – $70.00 per hour
