Primary objective

As part of the Regional Ecosystem and Landscape Mapping (REALM) program multidisciplinary team, support the development of the landscape and soil component of the mapping across the Northern Territory.

Context statement The Flora and Fauna and Land Resources Divisions are jointly developing Regional Ecosystem and Landscape Mapping across the Northern Territory. The mapping will integrate vegetation, soil and landform information to support the development of a wide range of economic, environmental and land use-planning benefits for the Northern Territory.

Key duties and responsibilities

Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to develop ecosystem and landscape mapping and information in

the Northern Territory.
1. Actively participate in field surveys to collect soil and landscape data adhering to the Northern Territory and Australian

guidelines.
1. Work collaboratively with senior scientists to support the collation, database curation and integration of data for analysis.
2. Use geographic information systems and remote sensing data for the purpose of generating map products.
3. Support the preparation of quality scientific reports and map products for publishing in a timely manner.
4. Communicate effectively and participate in development opportunities.
5. Under the direction of senior scientists communicate with government agencies, industry groups, land managers and land

use planners regarding REALM information.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. A relevant scientific degree qualification or equivalent from a recognised tertiary institution.
2. Experience undertaking land resource assessment projects and field data collection.
3. Knowledge of national guidelines and classification systems for soil and land survey.
4. Experience using geographic information systems and knowledge of remote sensing data.
5. Ability to work effectively in a team including working in remote field environments.
6. Aptitude for writing and compiling information for reports and other products for publication.
7. Ability to communicate effectively, both written and orally with a range of scientific and non-scientific clients, especially

people from diverse cultural backgrounds.
1. An NT Driver Licence or equivalent and ability to operate a manual four-wheel drive vehicle in off-road conditions.

Desirable

1. Experience working with soil and land resources of northern Australia.

Further information The role requires field work that may involve travelling and camping in remote locations for up to 12 days.
