Join our Corporate Services team as a Senior Finance Officer and make valued contributions to the Flinders Island community. In this diverse role, you’ll oversee key finance functions including payroll, rates, revenue, financial processing and reporting, while providing trusted advice and support across Council.
We’re looking for an experienced finance professional who is organised, accurate, solutions-focused and confident working independently. You’ll be part of a supportive, close-knit workplace while enjoying everything that picturesque Flinders Island has to offer.
Your responsibilities will include
Payroll
- Manage Council’s payroll function, ensuring accurate, timely and compliant employee remuneration and statutory reporting.
- Maintain accurate payroll records in accordance with legislation, industrial instruments and Council policies.
- Provide payroll advice and support to employees and managers and contribute to process and control improvements.
Property and Rates
- Coordinate Council’s property and rating functions, including property records, rates and related revenue activities.
- Manage debt recovery, payment arrangements, concessions, remissions and rebates in accordance with legislative and Council requirements.
- Provide advice on property and rating matters and support annual rating reviews, modelling and reporting.
Financial Management and Reporting
- Support financial management through the processing, reconciliation and monitoring of financial transactions, banking and revenue activities.
- Prepare financial reports, statutory returns,
reconciliations and other financial information for operational and compliance purposes.
- Maintain financial systems, records and internal controls and assist with budgeting, audits and continuous improvement.
General
- Develop, maintain and review finance-related policies, procedures and documentation, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, standards and Council requirements.
- Maintain confidentiality and discretion when dealing with sensitive Council, employee and community matters.
- Contribute to Corporate Services objectives and undertake other duties consistent with the position’s skills, competencies and classification.
About you
We are looking for someone who combines strong technical financial knowledge with excellent judgement, communication skills and a commitment to accuracy.
You will ideally have
- A qualification in finance up to Diploma level, or an equivalent combination of relevant skills and experience.
- At least five years' experience in finance roles, with demonstrated experience across payroll, accounts payable and accounts receivable.
- Sound knowledge of payroll, GST, superannuation and other legislative requirements relevant to financial processing.
- Experience working within established policies and procedures and contributing to their improvement.
- Strong problem-solving skills, particularly when identifying and resolving errors within financial management systems.
- The ability to understand user requirements and develop clear, meaningful financial reports.
- Exceptional attention to detail and a demonstrated commitment to accuracy.
- A proactive approach to improving processes, finding practical solutions and embracing new ideas.
