The Story pay.com.au is one of the fastest-growing fintechs in Australia: 100,000+ businesses trust it to manage their payments, bills and expenses, and it's processing billions of dollars a year at roughly 80% growth, year on year. A fresh US$28M raise is now fuelling US expansion. At this stage, a new acquisition channel isn't a side project, it's a growth lever the business is building a whole team around.

The Role

This is a brand new Tech Lead role: the first engineering hire on a newly formed growth and activation team. No existing team, no finished roadmap. You'll own technical delivery across the growth funnel and the make-a-payment flow, and help shape the priorities as the roadmap comes together.

The experience customers have across this journey is core to how this team wins, and you'll bring the front-end firepower to shape it. And you'll build a real multi-agent AI workflow into how the team ships: front-end, back-end and analytics agents doing meaningful work. Expect a 60/40 split between hands-on coding and engineering practice, and a direct line to Dee, the CTO.

React and TypeScript on the front end, PostgreSQL, a serverless setup on Lambda, ECS and Terraform, backed by Datadog and Amplitude/Mixpanel.

First hire. Build from zero. Real commercial weight behind it. This is a brand new product for the business, so it's not all set out for you, you decide what good looks like: for the roadmap, for the team's AI-native workflow, for how every engineer who joins after you actually works. You'll also sit in the wider tech leads group, with real visibility into how engineering practice is shaped across the whole department.

Who Should Apply

Full-stack engineers with a genuine front-end lean, who own UX-heavy flows end to end rather than hand them off. You've got real, hands-on experience building AI-forward, multi-agent workflows, and you've led technical direction for a team before, ideally as a first tech lead or in another green-field setting where you're helping set the direction as you go. Growth, activation or onboarding experience is a bonus. FinTech experience is also a bonus, but not mandatory.
