Join a major Australian defence organisation responsible for sustaining and building some of the nation's most complex maritime capability, operating across multiple sites in a high assurance, security sensitive environment.

With a significant national program of work and an expanding Work Health, Safety and Environment function, this business is investing in the systems, governance and assurance capability that underpins safe delivery. As a result, they are seeking an experienced Technical Writer to take ownership of the organisational WHSE policy and procedure suite.

The Opportunity

You'll be responsible for creating, maintaining and updating WHSE policies, procedures and supporting controlled documentation, making sure everything is clear, consistent and aligned to governance requirements, operational needs and WHS obligations.

Working closely with WHSE leaders, operational SMEs and document control, you'll ensure documentation reflects current work practices and risk controls, supports genuine consultation, applies contemporary useability principles, remains version controlled and audit ready, and is fit for purpose across sites and functions.

Key Responsibilities

- Draft, update and maintain WHSE policies, procedures, standards and guidance with plain English clarity and operational usability.
- Manage the full document lifecycle covering versioning, review cycles, approvals, publishing and archiving, and maintain controlled libraries in SharePoint.
- Facilitate structured SME input, workshops and review sessions, capturing and incorporating consultation feedback.
- Apply templates, style guides and standardised terminology to improve readability and consistency across the documentation suite.
- Maintain a documentation plan, pipeline and status reporting, and support audits with records and evidence.
- Translate technical and operational WHSE requirements into practical documents that support systems of work, information and training.





About You We're interested in hearing from experienced documentation professionals who understand how governance, risk and operational reality come together in a regulated environment.

You may come from a technical writing, document control, quality, engineering or WHS background, but you'll bring:

- Established background in a technical writing or documentation specialist role, ideally within defence, construction, manufacturing, heavy industry or utilities.
- Demonstrated experience developing policies, procedures, standards and work instructions using structured authoring practices, including SME interviews, process mapping and workflow documentation.
- Strong document lifecycle and version control discipline from draft through to archive.
- High level proficiency across Microsoft 365, particularly Word, SharePoint and Teams, with strong formatting skills. Experience with authoring or diagram tools such as Visio is desirable.
- Tertiary qualification in technical communication, professional writing, communications or information management, or equivalent capability gained through substantial industry experience.
- Knowledge of document control, governance or quality management system principles. A WHS qualification such as a Cert IV is desirable but not mandatory.
- Australian citizenship, with the ability to obtain and maintain an Australian Government security clearance.
