Metro Tasmania is launching Women Moving Metro, a women-only Bus Driver intake commencing 16 November. This targeted intake is designed to encourage more women to consider a safe, stable and meaningful career in public transport — with paid training, licence support and guidance from people who want you to succeed.

You do not need previous bus driving experience. If you are reliable, calm under pressure, confident with people and ready to learn, we will support you to build the skills and confidence to drive the bus.

About the Role

As a Bus Driver at Metro, you’ll help keep Tasmania moving safely, reliably and with care. You’ll take people to work, school, appointments and community activities, playing an important role in everyday life across the state.

Through Women Moving Metro, you’ll join a group of women putting their careers in motion together. You’ll be supported through a six-week paid training program that builds your confidence step by step, with practical training, clear expectations, experienced trainers and support to gain a Heavy Rigid licence for Metro driving.

We know many women already have the skills that make great bus drivers — communication, patience, care, judgement, reliability and a strong focus on safety. This intake is about creating a more visible and supportive pathway for women who may not have seen themselves in bus driving before.

Skills, Experience and What We’re Looking For

We’re looking for women who are safe, reliable, calm under pressure and good with people. You may have experience working with customers, caring for others, supporting a team, or doing practical work. If you have solid people skills and a safety mindset, this could be the career move for you.

To be considered, you’ll need:

- A current full Australian driver’s licence held for at least 2 years
- Full working rights in Australia
- A current Registration to Work with Vulnerable People, or evidence you have already applied
- A strong commitment to safety, respectful customer service and following procedures

What We’ll Take Care Of

Metro will cover the cost of:

- National Police Check
- Pre-employment medical assessment, including drug and alcohol testing
- Public Passenger Vehicle licence
- Heavy Rigid licence training required for Metro driving

Why a Women-Only Intake?

Women are under-represented in bus driving and transport roles. Metro is taking practical steps to create a more visible, supportive and welcoming pathway for women who may not have considered bus driving before. This intake is part of our commitment to building a workforce that better reflects the Tasmanian community we serve.
