If you like your engineering roles neatly carved into tiny tickets with very little context around why the work matters, this probably isn't the one.
Our client is a growing SaaS company building software used by boards, directors and executive teams across some of the world's leading organisations.
They're looking for a Senior Software Engineer who can do more than simply write good code.
You'll help shape technical decisions, build and improve meaningful product features and work closely with Product and customer-facing teams to understand what needs to be solved and why.
Some parts of the platform are contemporary.
Some parts have been around a little longer.
The right person will be comfortable with both.
This is a role for someone who enjoys solving real problems, improving things thoughtfully and leaving the product in a better place than they found it.
What you'll be doing
Your remit will be broad and will include:
Designing, building and maintaining software across the platform
Owning features from problem definition through to production release
Working across backend, frontend, data and infrastructure where needed
Building new product functionality and improving existing features
Modernising older areas of the platform over time
Writing clean, maintainable and well-tested code
Making practical technical decisions that balance speed, quality and long-term maintainability
Contributing to architectural discussions and technical design
Reviewing code and helping maintain robust engineering standards
Mentoring and supporting other engineers through collaboration and knowledge sharing
Troubleshooting production issues and improving reliability
Working closely with Product to understand user problems and commercial priorities
Bringing technical judgement into product conversations
Using AI-assisted engineering tools thoughtfully to improve productivity and quality
Helping improve engineering practices, tooling and development workflows
This is not a role where every solution will already be perfectly defined before it reaches you.
You'll be expected to ask questions, understand the problem and help work out the right way forward.
The technology
The current environment includes:

There are also older parts of the platform using Razor and jQuery.
That is part of the opportunity.
The business is continuing to invest in the platform and wants to modernise sensibly rather than rewrite everything because a newer framework happened to trend on Hacker News last Tuesday.
You'll need to understand when something genuinely needs to change, when it can be improved incrementally and when leaving something alone is actually the better engineering decision.
The environment




This is a product engineering environment where your work is visible.
You won't be one engineer buried inside an enormous technology function.
You'll work closely with Product, Engineering and customer-facing teams, which means you'll have context around who is using what you build and why it matters.
The platform supports complex work for a sophisticated client base, so quality, reliability and security matter.
The team is looking for engineers who can make good trade-offs, move work forward and avoid turning every technical decision into a six-week philosophical debate.
There is also plenty of opportunity to influence how the engineering function continues to evolve as the business grows.
What we're looking for
You'll ideally bring strong experience across:
Full-stack software engineering
C# and .
NET / .
NET Core
React and TypeScript
SQL Server or another relational database
Cloud-based development, ideally Microsoft Azure
APIs and integrations
Testing, code review and production support
Working within established software products
Improving or modernising legacy systems
Making sound technical decisions in real-world product environments
You do not need to be brilliant across every single part of the stack.
You'll also bring:
A genuine product mindset
Curiosity about the customer problem, not just the technical task
The ability to explain technical concepts clearly
A collaborative and open-minded approach
Comfort working through ambiguity
The confidence to challenge an idea thoughtfully when needed
Good judgement around technical trade-offs
Strong attention to detail
A high quality bar without becoming paralysed by perfection
The ability to take ownership and follow work through
An interest in modern engineering tools and practices
Experience with areas such as secure software development, OWASP, authentication and authorisation, multi-tenant SaaS, observability, performance optimisation or design systems would also be valuable.
AI is part of the engineering toolkit
The team is already using and exploring AI-assisted development tools.
That includes tools such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, coding agents and MCP.
They're not looking for someone who blindly accepts whatever an AI tool produces and hopes the test suite catches it.
They are interested in engineers who understand where AI can genuinely help.
That might include:
Refactoring existing code
Improving test coverage
Exploring implementation approaches
Helping investigate or troubleshoot issues
The expectation is simple.




Use the tools where they make you better and faster, but keep applying proper engineering judgement around security, maintainability, architecture and code quality.

You'll probably be someone who likes understanding the whole problem.
You don't just want a ticket that says build this.
You want to know who needs it, why they need it and whether the solution being proposed actually makes sense.
You'll be comfortable getting into existing code without immediately declaring that everything needs to be rewritten.
You'll know that good engineering is often about making sensible improvements over time rather than chasing technical perfection.
You'll care about quality, but you'll also care about shipping.
You'll have opinions, but you won't need to win every argument.
And you'll be happy working in a team where engineers are expected to think, contribute and take ownership rather than simply follow instructions.

The role is full-time and based in Melbourne CBD, with a hybrid working model of approximately 3 days per week in the office.
