Multi Skilled Operators - Slag Handling - Women strongly encouraged to apply
Interested in heavy industry but never worked as an operator before? This could be your opportunity.
SCE will be operating a new, contemporary plant to deliver safe and efficient slag handling operations at the No.6 Blast Furnace at Port Kembla Steel Works and we are looking for people who are ready to learn, grow and build a career in heavy industry.
This is a hands-on heavy industrial role working around the blast furnace, specialised mobile equipment and molten slag. You will be part of a new operation using brand-recent plant and equipment, with the opportunity to build skills across several different operating roles working across a rotating 12 hour day/night shift roster.
Be part of something new
You will be working around:
Molten slag and high-temperature operating areas
Specialised heavy mobile equipment
Brand-new plant and machinery
Large-scale steelmaking operations
The Cast House Floor and blast furnace operating environment
No two shifts will necessarily look the same.
You will be joining while the operation is still new, giving you the opportunity to learn the equipment, processes and site from the beginning.
What you'll be doing
You will be trained to work across a range of slag handling activities, including:
Operating Kress Slag Pot Carriers, transporting and handling pots of molten slag
Managing liquid slag on the Casthouse floor at No.6 Blast Furnace and the Slag Granulation Plant
Operating heavy mobile equipment such as Cat 990 front-end loaders
Completing pre-starts and routine operational inspections
Monitoring equipment and operating conditions
Identifying and reporting hazards,

defects and operational issues
Providing relief across different operating positions
Working closely under the direction of the Shift Team Leader, in support of plant operations and maintenance
Maintaining high standards of housekeeping and secure work practices
What we're looking for
You will be working around heat, heavy equipment, molten materials and large-scale industrial processes. Previous experience as an operator in these areas is highly regarded.
We are interested in people with transferable skills, the right attitude to safety and a genuine willingness to learn.
We are on the lookout for dedicated team players who possess:
A strong commitment to safety
Reliability and a willingness to turn up and contribute
Good communication and teamwork
The ability to follow instructions and procedures
Good situational awareness
Confidence learning new equipment and tasks
A willingness to work in a heavy industrial environment
The ability to work rotating day and night shifts
Relevant mobile plant licences including
Front-end loader/Skid steer/Forklift licenses/HR licence
are desirable.
Why Join SCE?
This is a rare opportunity to join a team while the operation is still being established.
The plant is new.
The equipment is new.
The team is new.
And your opportunity to grow with it is new.
You will have the opportunity to learn the operation and processes from the beginning and build experience and knowledge in one of the Illawarra's most significant heavy industrial environments.
And when you're not at work, you'll have the opportunity to enjoy everything the Illawarra has to offer—from beaches and national parks to its vibrant coastal lifestyle.
