About the department
The department provides a wide range of learning and development support and services.
The department provides policy leadership, plans for the future of education in Victoria and leads key cross-sector collaboration.
The department plays an important system steward role by providing support, guidance, oversight and assurance across early childhood and school education systems, as well as directly providing school education and 50 new early learning centres.
About the division
The Communications Division collaborates with key stakeholders to strategically shape and deliver communication and community engagement opportunities.
The division is responsible for the delivery of communications on behalf of the department to support and improve Victoria's education.
The partnership allows the division to support the Victorian Government priorities in early childhood and school education.
This includes engaging with the department's workforce, supporting the implementation of policies and reforms, protecting, and strengthening the reputation of our education and providing communications support and advice to the Victorian Government.
About the role
We have a rare opportunity for an experienced speechwriter in the department's Communications Division.
This is an ongoing part-time (3 days a week) position in our small high-performing speechwriting team.
The Senior Speechwriter is responsible for researching and drafting speeches and speaking notes for the department Secretary, Minister for Education, Minister for Children, parliamentary secretaries and other departmental staff.
The Senior Speechwriter also contributes to presentations, forewords, web content, media releases and other products as needed.
Responsibilities
The Senior Speechwriter:
* translates and synthesises complex policy, program and operational information into clear,



engaging stories to be delivered by government and department leaders
* adapts their writing style to reflect the voices of our leaders, and understands how to connect with different audiences
* works with teams across the department to research, check facts and make sure written content is accurate, consistent and complete
* works collaboratively with communications staff, senior leaders, program teams and subject-matter experts
* builds strong, trusted relationships with senior leaders
* provides expert advice and support to the rest of the Communications Division as needed.
About you
We are looking for a writer to join our close-knit, supportive team, to tell the story of the department's critical work and why it matters.
As our Senior Speechwriter, you will:
* be an exceptional writer and editor, with sharp research skills and strong attention to detail
* know how to create a robust, compelling narrative from disparate sources
* be unfazed by working to short deadlines while managing multiple projects
* be confident working independently
* have solid judgement and show discretion when handling sensitive information
* be able to quickly build rapport with people at all levels
* be organised, with an eye on how to improve processes
* be a strong advocate for plain language and accessible writing
* keep up to date with communications best practice.
Desirable qualifications and experience
The successful candidate will hold a relevant tertiary qualification, with several years' experience in a similar role.




Communications experience in the Victorian Government or public sector is highly desirable.
