Coordinator Aboriginal Cultural Inclusion
Indigeco is partnering with Wollongong City Council to recruit a Coordinator, Aboriginal Cultural Inclusion to establish and lead Council's newly formed Aboriginal Cultural Inclusion Team.
This is a significant leadership opportunity for an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander professional passionate about strengthening community connections, advancing cultural inclusion and creating meaningful, long-term outcomes for community.
You will lead a small team of Aboriginal Cultural Inclusion Officers while working closely with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, Council leaders, government agencies and community organisations.
This is an identified role under Section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act (NSW) 1977. Aboriginality is an essential requirement of the position. Applicants must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent, identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person and be accepted as such by the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community.

About the role
You will provide leadership across Aboriginal cultural inclusion, community engagement and reconciliation initiatives, while providing trusted cultural advice and guidance across Council.
The role will also contribute to Council's reconciliation journey, including its recently adopted second Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan and the development of a Cultural Safety Framework.
Key responsibilities
- Lead, develop and support the newly established Aboriginal Cultural Inclusion Team.
- Build strong, respectful relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
- Provide cultural advice and guidance across Council.
- Lead community capacity-building programs, projects and initiatives.
- Champion reconciliation, cultural inclusion and culturally safe practices.
- Build partnerships with community organisations, government agencies and key stakeholders.
- Influence organisational decision-making and support positive cultural change.
- Monitor and evaluate initiatives to ensure they deliver meaningful community outcomes.
About you
You will be an authentic and collaborative leader with strong cultural knowledge, community credibility and the ability to build trusted relationships across both community and organisational environments.
You will bring:
- Extensive knowledge of Aboriginal cultures, kinship systems, histories and contemporary issues.
- Strong leadership experience, ideally including direct people leadership and team development.
- Demonstrated experience leading community programs, projects, services or initiatives.
- Solid community engagement and stakeholder relationship skills.
- The ability to influence outcomes, advocate constructively and navigate complex environments.
- Experience supporting organisational or cultural change.
- Strong strategic thinking, communication and relationship-building capability.
- A relevant degree qualification.
- Experience contributing to Reconciliation Action Plans, Cultural Safety Frameworks or Aboriginal inclusion strategies will be highly regarded but is not essential.
What's on offer
- $107,513 to $136,194 + superannuation, based on skills, experience and qualifications.
- Permanent full-time position, 35 hours per week.
- Hybrid working and flexible work arrangements.
- Five weeks annual leave, plus leave provisions for NAIDOC Week and Sorry Business.
