If you’re currently studying accounting and looking for an opportunity to start building your career before you graduate, this is an excellent chance to learn from an experienced and highly qualified finance team.
We are partnering with a successful and growing Australian organisation to appoint an Undergraduate Accountant to its finance team in Eight Mile Plains.
This isn't a role where you'll be expected to arrive with years of accounting experience. The team is looking for someone with the right attitude, aptitude and genuine ambition to build a career in accounting.
Ideally, you'll be approximately 6–18 months away from completing an accounting degree, with aspirations to pursue your CA or CPA qualification
following graduation.
You might be a university student beginning your professional career, or perhaps you've made the decision to study accounting later in your career and are now looking for the opportunity to get your foot in the door. Either background could work well.
The Role
You'll join an established finance function and learn accounting from the ground up, working alongside experienced finance professionals including a number of CA/CPA-qualified accountants.
Initially, you'll support the team across foundational finance and accounting activities, with your responsibilities increasing as your knowledge and capability develop.
Your exposure will include:
- Accounts payable and transactional accounting
- Invoice processing, purchase orders and payment processes
- Bank, supplier and account reconciliations
- General ledger and journal support
- Assisting with month-end processes
- Expense and credit card reconciliations
- Supporting the broader accounting team with reporting and analysis
- Learning finance systems and accounting processes
- Exposure to qualified Management Accountants, Financial Accountants and senior finance leaders
- Taking on increasingly accounting responsibilities as you develop
The intention is not for you to remain in transactional accounting. You'll build the fundamentals first, before progressively gaining broader exposure and developing your accounting career within the team.
About You
We're less concerned about how much accounting experience you already have and more interested in where you want your career to go.
You'll ideally:
- Be currently completing a Bachelor degree in Accounting, Commerce or Business with an accounting major
- Be approximately 6–18 months from graduation
- Have an ambition to become CA or CPA qualified
- Be genuinely interested in developing a long-term career in accounting
- Have strong attention to detail and numerical aptitude
- Be comfortable learning new systems and processes
- Communicate well and enjoy being part of a team
- Bring a positive attitude,
curiosity and willingness to learn
Previous office, accounts, administration or finance experience would be helpful, but isn't essential.
Equally, we welcome applications from people who have transitioned into accounting studies after beginning their career in another field.
Why Apply?
The quality of the team around you is one of the biggest advantages of this role.
You'll be surrounded by experienced accounting professionals and have the chance to learn directly from people who have completed the journey you're starting now.
This is an opportunity to earn while completing your studies, build genuine commercial accounting experience before graduation and create a pathway into a long-term accounting career.

The role of the Finance Manager is changing. Traditionally, Finance Managers have been responsible for financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting and compliance. Today, organisations increasingly expect them to do much more: influence strategy,
support commercial decisions and lead finance transformation. For businesses hiring their next finance leader, the question is no longer simply whether someone can manage the numbers. Can they help the business make better decisions? 5 capabilities shaping the next generation of Finance Managers 1. Commercial thinking Finance Managers are increasingly expected to move beyond reporting what happened and help shape what happens next. That means understanding the broader business, challenging assumptions and translating financial insights into commercial recommendations. In Australia, Hays has identified commercial acumen as one of the most important capabilities for senior finance leaders, highlighting the growing importance of finance professionals who can operate as true business partners. 2. FP&A; and strategic planning Forecasting and budgeting remain core responsibilities, but today's Finance Manager needs to think in scenarios. Strong FP&A; capability allows finance leaders to identify risks, model opportunities and give leadership teams a clearer view of what lies ahead. 3. Technology and transformation Automation, AI, data and ERP transformation are changing how finance teams operate. Finance Managers don't need to be technologists, but they do need to understand how technology can improve processes, reporting and decision-making. According to Hays, 51% of organisations in Australia's Financial and Insurance Services sector report skills gaps, reinforcing the challenge businesses face in finding professionals with the right combination of technical and future-focused capabilities. 4. Communication and influence The contemporary Finance Manager needs to communicate with more than the finance team. Whether presenting to executives, partnering with operations or challenging a commercial decision, they need to turn complex financial information into clear, actionable insights. Technical expertise gets the conversation started. Communication and influence help move it forward. 5. People leadership As finance functions become more strategic and multidisciplinary, Finance Managers are also becoming increasingly important people leaders. The ability to develop talent, lead change and build high-performing teams is becoming just as important as technical capability. Hiring for what comes next The best Finance Manager for an organisation isn't necessarily the person with the longest list of technical credentials. It is the person whose capabilities match where the business is going. For a growing organisation, that might mean commerciality and FP&A.; For an ASX-listed business, it could be reporting, governance and stakeholder management. For a business undergoing transformation, technology and change leadership may be critical.
