We have a current vacancy as either a Clinical Nurse Consultant or Allied Health Court Liaison Officer within the Mental Health Forensics Unit. As the senior clinician, you will deliver high-level forensic mental health services within police watch-houses, Magistrates Courts, and remote Cape and Torres Strait Island communities. This role includes regular travel to rural and remote locations.

About us:

The Cairns and Hinterland Mental Health and Alcohol, Other Drugs Service (MHAODS) is responsible for delivering Mental Health and AOD Services throughout the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service and for supporting other mental health and AODS in the surrounding Hospital and Health Services of Cape York, Torres Strait Northern Peninsula Area. Its primary objective is to ensure access to a comprehensive range of treatment and support services, clinical treatment, rehabilitation, disability support, as well as early intervention, and mental health prevention and promotion.

The Court Liaison Service (CLS), based in Cairns, delivers specialist consultation-liaison mental health services to the court and broader mental health sector, supporting individuals with mental health needs who are engaged with the criminal justice system. The service provides timely clinical assessment, risk formulation, and care coordination to inform decision-making and facilitate appropriate management pathways. CLS clinicians work collaboratively with judicial officers, legal representatives, Queensland Health services, and external stakeholders to ensure a coordinated and responsive approach. The service also undertakes the preparation of high-quality medicolegal reports, including Fitness for Trial and Unsoundness of Mind assessments, in accordance with legislative and court requirements,



contributing to safe, lawful, and clinically informed outcomes.

About your opportunity:

In this position you will…

- Undertake regular travel to Cape and Torres Strait Island communities to provide outreach, complete assessments, and support culturally appropriate forensic mental health care.
- Provide clinical leadership, consultation, and supervision to less experienced clinicians, students, and multidisciplinary team members.
- Apply specialist clinical expertise and high-level judgement to manage complex, high-risk, and ambiguous forensic mental health presentations.
- Prepare and present authoritative medicolegal reports and expert advice to the Magistrates Court, including determinations of fitness for trial and unsoundness of mind under the Mental Health Act 2016.
- Deliver advanced, independent mental health assessments within watch-house, court, and remote outreach settings, including Cape and Torres Strait communities.
