Support the efficient delivery of Council’s environmental obligations and services with respect to statutory requirements, the ISO14001 Environmental Management System and ecologically sustainable development.
About Us
Banana Shire is situated in Central Queensland, Australia located 120 km west of the growing industrial city and port of Gladstone - and an easy drive to the city of Rockhampton.
Our population is approximately 15,000 people spread over 28,577 square kilometres. Major industries in the area include Coal Mining, Power Generation, Beef Production, dryland cropping and irrigation such as Lucerne and Cotton.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide qualified advice on environmental management, legislative requirements, and sustainability to Council and employees
- Liaise with the community, government agencies and relevant business and industry groups as required
- Assist with Council’s internal and third-party quality and environmental audit processes
- Undertake assessment of ecological sustainability aspects of development applications in accordance with the Planning Act 2016 (Qld) and appropriate environmental legislations including the Environmental Protection Act 1994 (Qld
- Conduct environmental assessments and assess compliance with relevant legislation and regulations
- Assist with the management of incidents and non-compliances in line with environmental authority conditions, relevant management plans, and related procedures
- Assist with the development, implementation,
and certification of the Council’s Environmental Management System in compliance with the ISO 14001:2015 standard
- Develop, delivery and evaluate environmental educational materials and presentations
- Assist with the development and review of applicable Management Plans (e.g. Environmental Management Plans)
- Deliver projects/programs in accordance with Council and departmental goals
- Undertake environmental inspections of Council’s facilities, operations and projects as required
- Actively contribute to the teams within the Department and workforce, promote best practice and maintain professional standards, integrity and good public relations
- Contribute to the promotion of the image of the Council and the maximisation of good public relations
- Liaise with clients, other Council staff, the public, consultants, utility and government authorities in the performance of duties, including providing and obtaining information
- Undertake routine administrative tasks as required by the position, e.g. timesheets
- Assist senior staff to continuously improve work processes and develop new practices, as required
- Participate in training, exercises and response to disaster management and recovery as required

QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION AND LICENCE REQUIREMENTS
Compulsory
- Queensland ‘C’ class driver’s licence (minimum requirement – provisional licence)
- Tertiary qualifications in environmental science, environmental management, environmental engineering or natural resource management or other relevant discipline.
- Queensland Construction White Card or Blue Card (General Safety Induction).
ABILITIES, SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED
Compulsory
- Relevant Environmental Science, Environmental Management or Environmental Policy experience
- High level of interpersonal, oral and written communication skills and report writing skills
- High standard of keyboard and computer skills including working knowledge of the MS Office suite of programs
- Demonstrated experience in the practical application of relevant legislation including the Environmental Protection Act 1994, Planning Act 2016 and relevant Regulations
- Ability to analyse legal document, research new initiatives and make recommendation of required outcomes
- Attention to detail, time management and problem-solving skills
- Proven ability to meet performance objectives and improve service delivery
- Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to EEO and WHS principles and practices.
- Demonstrated experience in developing, implementation and maintaining and Environmental Management System to ISO14001 certification.
