Set In Steel
Unanderra
You've built a lot of things. This one will be different.
We make architectural concrete. Benchtops, outdoor kitchens, basins, baths, hearths, dining tables. All one-offs, all handmade, most of them going into some of the best homes on the coast.
No slabs. No driveways. No two jobs the same.
We're looking for a carpenter, joiner, cabinet maker or shopfitter who wants to learn the whole thing.
What the work actually is
You'll start with what you already know — setting out, building forms and moulds, joinery frames for outdoor kitchens, reading plans, getting it dead square off a tape.
Then you'll learn the rest of it, directly from the Owner: batching and pouring, stripping, diamond grinding, polishing, sealing, and installing the finished pieces on site.
That's the deal. You work through every stage of the job yourself, to a high standard, and you learn why each step has to happen the way it does. It's a small team, so there's nothing you don't get a go at.
Some weeks you're in the workshop at Unanderra. Some days you're on site in a finished home, moving a benchtop through a doorway with a couple of millimetres to play with. Plenty of days you're doing both.
Who we're after
A trade background in carpentry, joinery, cabinet making, shopfitting or similar
You can read a plan and set out accurately off a tape — that's most of this job
You think. When something doesn't fit you work out why before you force it
You don't cut corners. If it's a millimetre out you'd rather fix it than hope nobody notices
You take direction and genuinely want to learn a recent trade, not prove you already know it
Fit enough for real work — team lifts over 30kg, power tools, overhead fitting
Current driver's licence and White Card
Handy but not essential: Cert III, forklift (LF), EWP, first aid
Who it isn't for
Anyone looking to get off the tools and into an office
Anyone who's comfortable with "near enough"
What you get
$1,790 – $1,923 a week, plus super — $93,000 to $100,000 a year. That figure covers your 38 ordinary hours and your 4.5 guaranteed overtime hours. Super is paid on top of it
Where you start in that depends on what you walk in with. The top of it is for someone running installs on their own
7:00am–4:00pm Monday to Friday. 8.5 paid hours a day, so 4.5 hours at time-and-a-half every week, guaranteed — not "when it's available"
Paid weekly. Proper PAYG, payslips, sick leave, annual leave. No ABN, no cash
No wet weather days lost. The workshop doesn't stop
Every tool supplied , and the install van is fully kitted out. Bring your own if you prefer them, but you don't need to
You start and finish at Unanderra and travel to site in our vehicles — not your ute. No fuel, no kilometres, no tools sitting in your car overnight
Work shirts and hoodies, eye and ear protection supplied
A set of skills almost nobody in Australia has
Pay rises tied to something you control — no rework, no lost time, no incidents, and taking on more responsibility. Not tied to how long you've been here
And what that's actually worth
Most carpenters on wages pay for a fair bit of this out of their own pocket. You won't be:
Tools supplied and replaced — $3,000 to $5,000 a year
No wet weather days lost, which is 10 to 15 days a year on residential — $3,500 to $5,000
Workwear and PPE — $500 to $800
That's $12,000 to $18,000 a year you're not paying for yourself.
About us
Set In Steel is a family-owned business in Unanderra. We handcraft architectural concrete for high-end residential and commercial projects right across NSW.
We're advertising because we want one or two people who'll still be here in ten years, who know this work as well as we do, and who get something out of standing back at the end of a job and looking at what the team just made.
