Are you interested in building your experience in health promotion, cancer prevention and screening?
We are seeking an ACON staff member for a short-term internal secondment as Community Health Promotion Officer, Cancer Programs. This is an opportunity to contribute to practical, peer-led health promotion activities that support LGBTQ+ communities to access inclusive cancer prevention and screening information, services and support.

- This role supports the delivery of cancer prevention and screening work across NSW and nationally.
- You’ll help bring campaigns, events and community activities to life, working directly with communities and peer networks.
- The role is ideal for someone with a strong interest in health promotion, community engagement and equity focused practice.
- 3 Month Fixed Term Role,start ASAP through December 2026.

What are Cancer Programs?

Cancer Programs is part of ACON’s Population Health Programs Unit, alongside LGBTQ+ Women’s Health and Digital Engagement and Campaigns.The Unit works across health promotion, community engagement, campaigns and service delivery to improve health outcomes for LGBTQ+ communities. Its work is guided by inclusive, trauma-informed and culturally safe approaches.Cancer Programs delivers state and national initiatives focused on cancer prevention, screening and support. This includes community campaigns, outreach,



inclusive screening activities and the development of health promotion resources designed for LGBTQ+ communities.

Ok, so what’s the role?

As Community Health Promotion Officer, Cancer Programs, you will:

- Deliver peer-based health promotion and community engagement activities.
- Support the development and rollout of inclusive cancer screening campaigns.
- Coordinate outreach activities, workshops, screening activities and community events.
- Assist with developing accessible health promotion resources for priority communities.
- Build and maintain relationships with community groups, health services and stakeholders.
- Review and summarise evidence to support campaigns, projects and policy responses.
- Gather community feedback and support monitoring, data collection and reporting.
- Use digital platforms to support outreach, data entry and resource development.
- Communicate with diverse audiences and contribute to reports, presentations and other written materials.
- Support the onboarding, coordination and supervision of project volunteers.
- Contribute to project planning, team meetings, supervision and continuous improvement activities.

Who are we looking for?

We're looking for someone who:

- Is interested in developing their skills in health promotion, community engagement or cancer prevention and screening.
- Has experience delivering community engagement, education, events, outreach or health promotion activities.
- Communicates clearly and confidently with diverse communities and stakeholders.
- Has strong organisational and administrative skills.
- Can plan their work, manage competing tasks and deliver agreed outputs.
- Can work independently while contributing positively to a collaborative team.
- Is committed to equity, inclusion, cultural safety and peer-led practice.
- Is comfortable learning new subject matter,



systems and ways of working.
- Qualifications in public health, health promotion or a related discipline are relevant, although equivalent practical experience may also meet the position requirements.
- Experience working with LGBTQ+ communities, an understanding of cancer screening or health promotion, or experience supporting research, policy or advocacy would be beneficial but is not essential.

You’ll also need:

- Willingness to travel as required.

What else can we tell you?

- Secondment period: start ASAP through December 2026.
- Salary: Starting from $88,198.08 (Gross Annual Salary PLUS Superannuation and Leave Loading).
- Location: ACON’s Gadigal (Surry Hills), with flexible working options a possibility (away from the office).
- Hours: Full time (70 hours per fortnight), on a 3 month fixed term contract.

Desired Skills and Experience

- Tertiary qualifications in public health, health promotion, or a related discipline, or 1-3 years equivalent experience across Health Promotion Practitioner core competencies.
- Demonstrated experience in community engagement and health promotion delivery.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Valuable organisational and administrative skills.
- Commitment to equity, inclusion, and cultural safety.
- Current Australian driver’s licence and willingness to travel.
- Strong understanding of and commitment to working with ACON’s communities, including all LGBTQ+ peopleand people living with and affected by HIV.
- Experience working with and demonstrated commitment to ACON’s communities, particularly LGBTQ+ communities and intersecting priority populations, as well as people living with HIV.
- Understanding of cancer screening and health promotion principles.
- Experience supporting research, policy or advocacy initiatives.
