Job Overview

n

We're looking for an Senior Data Engineer (with the ability to obtain security clearance) to join a federal government digital health agency. You'll own the design, build and maintenance of data pipelines and analytics solutions that enable high-quality decision-making across the health system.

n

This is a hybrid contract role based in Sydney or Canberra, with flexibility to work remote most of the week (1 day/week onsite). You'll work autonomously under broad direction, take ownership of end-to-end solutions and contribute to platform strategy.

Key Responsibilities

n

- Design, build and maintain scalable data pipelines to ingest, transform and publish data.
n
- Develop and optimise data models and curated datasets for reporting and analytics.
n
- Establish and maintain strong data quality practices, including monitoring, validation and issue resolution.
n
- Analyse complex data problems, identify root causes and deliver practical solutions.
n
- Support analytical use cases by preparing and curating high-quality datasets.
n
- Take ownership of deliverables and manage competing priorities to deliver high-quality outcomes.
n




- Provide expert advice on complex data engineering issues and contribute to strategic platform direction.
n
- Collaborate closely with data analysts, data scientists and business stakeholders.
n
- Communicate complex technical concepts in clear, plain language to non-technical audiences.
n
- Apply modern data engineering practices, including testing, automation and performance optimisation.
n

Must-Have Requirements

n

n
- Australian citizenship + must be able to obtian security clearnace - anyone with an active NV1 preferred.
n
- 7+ years as a data engineer, with strong expertise in modern cloud platforms.
n
- Hands-on experience with Azure Data Factory, Databricks, Python (PySpark), SQL and Power BI.
n
- Proven experience designing and building scalable data pipelines (medallion/delta lake architecture preferred).
n
- Experience shipping data solutions in government, healthcare, finance or other regulated environments.
n
- Strong communication skills - you can explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
n
- Ability to work autonomously, take ownership and manage competing priorities.
n

Desirable

n

- Azure data platform certifications (Data Engineer, Solutions Architect).
n
- Experience with data governance, data quality frameworks or data vault modelling.
n
- Familiarity with CI/CD and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, Azure DevOps).
n
- Background in healthcare or government digital transformation.
n

The Role

- Location: Sydney or Canberra (hybrid, 1 day/week onsite)

- Duration: 12 months (with 12 month extension option)

- Hours: 37.5 per week, core hours 8:30am - 5:00pm Mon - Fri

- Rate: $140 - 150 per hour (inc. superannuation)
