About Chosen Family
n
Chosen Family fosters a community-centric ecosystem that embraces diversity, flexibility, and enrichment for all. We continuously reimagine how our services can create platforms for equality, inclusion, and belonging. Committed to a culture of acceptance, we ensure that everyone is welcomed and valued.
n
Recognising the interconnectedness of our humanity, we strive to empower individuals to live independently. By honouring each person's unique identity and experiences, we celebrate and uplift one another in return.
n
About the Support Opportunity
n
We are seeking a female Disability Support Worker to provide ongoing support to a 29-year-old non-binary participant living in Hazelbrook, NSW.
n
The participant is autistic and has ADHD, with additional physical health considerations including fibromyalgia, scoliosis and asthma. They are independently mobile and do not require high-care, manual handling or complex physical support.
n
The focus of this role is supporting the participant to develop greater independence, confidence and practical daily living skills, while promoting wellbeing, safety and participation in everyday life.
n
A female Support Worker is preferred, particularly someone who is genuinely LGBTQIA+-affirming, transgender-inclusive and comfortable supporting a non-binary person.
n
What Makes the Right Match?
n
This is a relationship-based support role where patience, trust, communication and mutual respect are particularly important.
n
The participant would ideally like a Support Worker who:
n
n
- Is female
n
- Is genuinely LGBTQIA+-affirming and transgender-inclusive
n
- Understands and respects non-binary identities and pronouns
n
- Has an understanding of autism, ADHD and neurodiversity
n
- Speaks calmly and at a comfortable pace
n
- Is patient and allows adequate processing and response time
n
- Does not rush,
pressure or overwhelm the participant
n
- Is sensitive to sensory overstimulation
n
- Is warm, approachable and non-judgemental
n
- Respects personal boundaries, routines, identity and individual choices
n
- Understands that good support means encouraging independence rather than taking over
n
n
What You'll Be Supporting With
n
Support will be tailored to the participant's goals and priorities and may include:
n
n
- Developing practical daily living skills
n
- Building greater independence with everyday tasks
n
- Household organisation, cleaning and maintaining a secure environment
n
- Encouraging healthy routines around meals, sleep and personal upkeep
n
- Community access and participation in meaningful activities
n
- Companionship and positive social connection
n
- Supporting confidence and independence
n
- Developing practical and employability-related skills
n
- Recognising and responding appropriately to sensory overload
n
- Providing respectful, trauma-informed and neurodiversity-affirming support
n
n
The participant is mobile and does not require hoisting, transfers, feeding support or other high-care assistance.
n
We are looking for someone who understands that different does not mean less.
n
The successful Support Worker will take the time to understand how the participant communicates, processes information and experiences their environment.
n
Rather than expecting the participant to adapt to the worker, we want someone who is willing to adapt their communication and support approach to the participant.
n
This includes allowing extra time for responses, recognising signs of sensory overstimulation and providing calm,
respectful support without unnecessary pressure.
n
LGBTQIA+ Inclusion
n
Being LGBTQIA+-affirming is an important part of this role.
n
The successful applicant should be someone who is comfortable, respectful and genuinely inclusive of LGBTQIA+ people, including transgender and non-binary people.
n
You don't need to be an expert—you do need to be open-minded, respectful, willing to learn and committed to creating a safe and affirming support environment.
n
Schedule
n
Ongoing weekly support is required:
n
Mondays: 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM; and
n
Fridays: 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM
n
There is some flexibility around the exact four-hour start and finish time, so applicants may propose a reasonable schedule that works consistently on either day.
n
Reliability and consistency are particularly important, as the goal is to establish a stable and positive support relationship over time.
n
Applicants must have:
n
n
- NDIS Worker Screening Check
n
- Working with Children Check (WWCC)
n
- First Aid Certificate
n
- Valid Australian Driver's Licence
n
- Reliable vehicle, where required for community access
n
- Understanding of LGBTQIA+ inclusive practice
n
n
Experience supporting autistic and/or neurodivergent people is highly regarded.
n
About Chosen Family
n
At Chosen Family, we believe that effective disability support starts with the right match.
n
Our goal isn't simply to fill a shift. We want to connect participants with Support Workers who understand their individuality, respect their choices and can build genuine, and consistent and trusting support relationships.
n
We strongly encourage applications from people with disability, Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people, Culturally & Linguistically Diverse people, and LGBTQIA+ people. We welcome and value lived experience and the knowledge it brings to support work.
n
If you are a patient, reliable and genuinely LGBTQIA+-affirming female Support Worker who believes in supporting people to live life on their own terms, we'd love to hear from you.
