External Sales Representative – Industrial and Technical Sales
Melbourne & Southern Region | Industrial / Engineering Sales
Global Market Leader | Autonomous Field Role | Established Accounts + Territory Development | Melbourne, Regional VIC, SA
Our client is a Germany-headquartered, third-generation family-owned organisation and one of the world's leading manufacturers of premium industrial wheels, castors and engineered mobility solutions.
With more than 70 years of engineering excellence and operations spanning more than 120 countries, the company has built an international reputation for quality, innovation, application expertise and long-term customer relationships. Its products can be found across manufacturing, engineering, materials handling & logistics, food processing, healthcare, defence, aviation, automation and numerous other industrial environments.
Following continued growth of its Australian operation, an opportunity now exists for an experienced and technically minded External Sales Representative to take responsibility for Melbourne and the broader Southern Region.
The Role
Reporting to the General Manager, this is a genuine field-based technical sales role combining existing account management, new business development and territory growth.
Melbourne metropolitan and regional Victoria will form the core of the territory, with responsibility also extending into South Australia as that market continues to develop. Regional and interstate travel, including overnight stays, will be required according to customer and business needs.
You will spend much of your time where the opportunities actually are — inside manufacturing plants, engineering workshops, warehouses, production facilities and industrial sites.
Rather than simply selling from a catalogue, you will work with engineers, maintenance personnel, production managers, operations teams, procurement and business owners to understand what they are trying to achieve and recommend the most appropriate solution.
Applications can involve load capacity, operating environment, floor conditions, ergonomics, equipment design, safety, productivity and service life. Comprehensive product and application training will be provided, supported by the Australian team and engineering specialists in Germany.
In time, the objective is simple: know your territory, know your customers and become the person they call when they have a mobility or materials-handling problem to solve.
What You'll Be Doing
· Manage, retain and grow an established portfolio of customers throughout the Southern Region while achieving agreed sales revenue, gross-margin and territory-growth objectives.
- Identify and develop new business across manufacturing, engineering and broader industrial markets.
- Re-engage dormant accounts and uncover opportunities within existing customers.
- Conduct regular customer visits, site assessments and technical discussions.
- Understand customer equipment, processes and applications before recommending solutions.
· Develop and manage a structured territory plan covering Melbourne, regional Victoria and South Australia.
· Manage opportunities from initial enquiry and technical clarification through quotation, structured follow-up, negotiation, order placement and ongoing account development.
· Maintain an active sales pipeline, accurate CRM records and reliable forecasts, and document customer interactions, agreed actions and follow-up requirements within established timeframes.
- Gather useful market intelligence around applications, competitors and emerging opportunities.
· Work closely with Internal Sales, Customer Service, Operations, Quality and international technical resources to coordinate quotations, orders, samples, technical enquiries and complex applications.
The role offers considerable autonomy. You will be trusted to organise your territory, prioritise opportunities and make productive use of your time rather than being micromanaged from an office.
You will also represent professionally at customer sites, trade shows and approved industry events, support the resolution of customer concerns with internal teams, and maintain company-provided equipment, samples and demonstration materials in a professional condition.
About You
We are less concerned about whether you have previously sold wheels and castors than whether you have the technical curiosity and commercial ability to learn why one solution works better than another.
Ideally, you will bring:
- Proven external B2B sales or business development experience.
- Exposure to manufacturing, engineering, industrial products, machinery, automation, materials handling, mechanical components or another technically oriented market.
· The ability to understand technical information, customer specifications and drawings, or the willingness and aptitude to develop this capability through training.
- A consultative approach to selling — asking questions before proposing solutions.
- The confidence to prospect, open new doors and create opportunities rather than simply service an existing account base.
· Robust relationship-building, negotiation and presentation skills, with the confidence to explain technical features, demonstrate products and communicate commercial value.
- The organisation and self-discipline required to manage a geographically diverse territory.
· Practical experience with CRM systems and Microsoft Office applications, together with the discipline to maintain accurate customer, opportunity and activity records.
· A current Australian driver’s licence, unrestricted Australian working rights, and the ability and willingness to travel regularly throughout the assigned territory, including regional and interstate travel and overnight stays when required.
Most importantly, you will enjoy being out in the market — meeting people, looking at applications, solving problems and developing relationships that turn into long-term business.
Why This Opportunity?
This is an opportunity to represent a premium global engineering brand while retaining the autonomy of managing your own substantial territory.
You will join a growing Australian operation backed by the resources of an established international manufacturer, with comprehensive product and technical training and access to specialist engineering expertise when required.
The company offers an attractive remuneration package, performance incentives and approved tools and resources for the role, including a fully maintained company vehicle, mobile phone and laptop, together with ongoing professional development and training opportunities.
For somebody who enjoys both the technical and commercial sides of industrial sales, this role offers varied technical challenges and considerable potential to develop the Southern Australian market.
