About the role

We are seeking a WHS Officer to join our team in Mount Gambier.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone looking to develop a career in Work Health and Safety, with previous WHS experience not essential.

Working closely with and under the guidance of our WHS Manager, you will gain practical experience across GEM Group's construction, quarrying, transport, workshop and administrative operations while developing your knowledge and capability in workplace health and safety.

The role combines structured learning with hands-on involvement in workplace inspections, hazard and incident management, WHS administration, workforce engagement and continuous improvement.

Key responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include:

- Assisting with the maintenance of WHS systems, procedures, registers and compliance activities.

- Participating in workplace inspections, safety observations and compliance checks.

- Assisting with hazard identification, risk assessments and practical control measures.

- Supporting incident and near-miss reporting, investigations and corrective actions.

- Assisting with the review and maintenance of SWMS, SOPs and other safety documentation.





- Supporting contractor and visitor onboarding and safety documentation.

- Maintaining WHS records, training information, competency records and registers.

- Assisting with weekly and monthly WHS reporting and performance information.

- Supporting inductions, toolbox meetings, safety campaigns and workplace communication.

- Contributing to the continuous improvement of GEM's WHS systems and safety culture.

The role provides exposure to a broad range of WHS activities across GEM's operations, with appropriate guidance and supervision as you develop your knowledge and experience.

About you

We are looking for someone who is practical, approachable and genuinely interested in building a career in workplace health and safety.

Ideally, you will have:

- A strong interest in WHS and a willingness to learn.

- Strong organisational and administrative skills with good attention to detail.

- Clear written and verbal communication skills.

- Confidence engaging respectfully with employees, Supervisors, Management and contractors.

- Valuable computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams.

- The ability to follow instructions, ask questions and work within your level of training and responsibility.





- A current Driver's Licence and willingness to travel to GEM workplaces and project sites across southeast South Australia and western Victoria.

- A Construction Industry White Card, or the ability and willingness to obtain one before attending construction sites.

Experience in construction, quarrying, transport, maintenance or heavy industry, would be advantageous but is not essential.

Training & development

This position has been designed as a development opportunity.

Applicants may already be studying WHS, or be willing to commence the Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety as part of the role.

You will work alongside an experienced WHS Manager and gain practical exposure to WHS systems and operational safety across a diverse range of work environments.
