Associate/Senior Associate - Criminal Lawyer
Ashworth Lawyers is a private criminal defence law firm and based in Brisbane CBD, with a focus on defending serious and complex Queensland and Commonwealth crimes.
We are currently seeking an experienced criminal lawyer to join our team at Associate or Senior Associate level.
The position has become available due to the maternity leave of one of our team members.
While the role will cover this period, it will also be ongoing.
The role will involve managing serious and complex Queensland and Commonwealth criminal matters at all stages, together with contributing to the training, mentoring and supervision of junior staff and the broader development of the firm through qualified, networking and industry activities.
How we work
There are no billable hour targets.
Instead, lawyers are expected to take full responsibility for the files under their carriage, complete the necessary work to a high standard and maintain strong client relationships.
Lawyers undertake private work only and generally manage ***** active files, with a high degree of autonomy in managing their files and time.
Hybrid work arrangements are available.
These arrangements may suit lawyers seeking greater flexibility around family or other commitments.

About you
has a minimum of 5 years' post-admission experience practising in criminal law.




Lawyers with 10+ years of experience are also encouraged to apply.
has strong knowledge of Queensland and Commonwealth criminal law and procedure
is confident managing serious and complex criminal matters with a high degree of autonomy
has strong advocacy and court experience
is experienced in preparing serious matters for all stages of the criminal law process, including bail applications, committals, sentences, trials and appeals
is experienced in briefing and working closely with counsel
demonstrates sound judgement and takes responsibility for the matters under their carriage
has excellent written and verbal communication skills
communicates effectively with clients and can manage difficult or sensitive matters professionally
is highly organised and has strong attention to detail
has a high level of competency with technology and modern legal systems
remains adaptable and effective in high-pressure situations
works effectively both independently and as part of a team
follows firm policies, procedures and systems
contributes to mentoring and training junior staff, professional activities and the broader development of the firm
values ongoing professional development and continual learning
