The Uniting Church in Australia (UCA) is a uniquely Australian Christian organisation that began in 1977 with the union of the Congregational, Methodist, and Presbyterian movements. It is one of the largest religious organisations in Australia. Each state across Australia has a Synod, with associated governing councils and boards. The Synods are drawn together through the National Assembly. The Synod of NSW and the ACT has three boards: Uniting, the Synod Board and Treasury and Investment Services.

The Synod of NSW and the ACT supports approximately 400 Congregations and faith communities, approximately 50,000 members, 4 Presbyteries, and nine schools and Parish Missions.

The Synod Mission Services acts as the ministerial, mission and shared services support group for the Synod of NSW and the ACT. The Synod Mission Services provides significant:

Pastoral and advisory support, and strategic leadership in developing and executing Synod’s strategies in mission and ministry in partnership with Presbyteries, Congregations, working groups and other bodies.

Mission and Educational assistance to the Church providing education, theological insight, strategy, research and resources for leadership, discipleship, ministry, and mission. It also manages the operations of United Theological College (UTC).

Centralised financial, IT&S;, property, insurance, risk management, HR, governance, compliance, communications and marketing and other support resources.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Risk and Business Continuity Manager sits within the Risk, Audit, & WHS team. The role reports into the Head of Risk, Audit, & WHS. It has responsibility for managing the day-to-day operations of risk mitigation, business continuity,



and policy and procedure development with primary responsibility for the overall implementation and maintenance of Synod’s risk management framework including the development and delivery of system support processes, tools and training and responsibility for promoting and improving the risk and compliance culture.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

This role will take responsibility for the following areas;

- Lead the implementation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of the Risk Management Framework, policies, processes, and tools, ensuring alignment with Synod Mission Services objectives and relevant legislative, regulatory and industry standards;
- Facilitate risk assessments, risk and control workshops, and the development, monitoring, and reporting of Key Risk Indicators (KRIs) for Synod Mission Services;
- Develop and maintain risk registers, control libraries, risk appetite measures and other risk management mechanisms to support effective monitoring and reporting;;
- Lead the development, implementation, and monitoring of the Synod’s business continuity policy and associated business continuity plans;;
- Facilitate business impact analysis, continuity planning activities, training exercises, simulations and reviews.
- Promote organisational readiness and resilience through education, awareness programs, and practical support to business units including forUniting Financial Services;;
- Foster a solid risk culture across the Synod through awareness, education, and communication. Serve as the main point of contact for risk and business continuity-related inquiries, providing guidance and support.
- Develop and implement mechanisms to identify and monitor risks across Synod, including the approach to evaluate, report and make recommendations on risk performance to the Synod’s management and risk governance committee .
- Monitor and analyse risk data to identify trends, merging issues and improvement opportunities and report on risk performance on a regular basis.
- Prepare complex and/or sensitive correspondence, corporate documents, reports, submissions, proposal papers and notes;




- Monitor and analyse key risk indicators and performance metrics, presenting findings for continuous improvement. Contribute to the work of the broader Culture of Safety team and Synod Mission Services as required;
- Undertake additional duties as required.

KEY CAPABILITIES

- Demonstrated experience in implementing and monitoring enterprise risk management frameworks and systems in complex organisations with broad risk profiles.
- Highly developed working knowledge of business continuity management and processes.
- A strategic and systems focus and the ability to innovate and manage complex projects to successful completion.
- Strong communication skills in both oral and written communications, and a proven capacity to develop and manage relationships with stakeholders and across business areas, engaging and collaborating to achieve outcomes and facilitate cooperation.
- Proven capacity to build and grow partnerships and work collaboratively with other to meet organisational objectives and show ability through change;
- Great problem solving and decision-making skills with the ability to research, monitor and synthesise information, identify risks and develop strategies to produce results;
