Open Pit Engineering Superintendent (FIFO to PNG)

NPL is a joint venture between Barrick Gold Corporation, Zijin Mining, and the Papua New Guinea Government, combining global mining expertise with a shared commitment to responsible resource development and long-term value creation for Papua New Guinea.

The Porgera Gold Mine will employ nearly 3,000 Papua New Guineans at full production and, over its 30-year operating history, has contributed approximately 10% of Papua New Guinea's total annual exports, making it one of the country's most significant economic assets.

About the role

n

The Open Pit Engineering Superintendent is responsible for leading the open pit engineering team in delivering protected, productive, and cost-effective mine designs, planning, and support services. This role oversees short, medium, and long-term mine planning, drill and blast engineering, and scheduling inputs to ensure production targets are consistently achieved in alignment with the life-of-mine strategy and overall operational objectives.

Key Responsibilities

- Lead and mentor a multidisciplinary team of mine planners, drill & blast engineers and technical personnel
n
- Oversee the development and execution of short-, medium- and long-term mine plans
n
- Review and approve production schedules, haulage profiles, mine designs and waste dump designs
n
- Ensure mine plans meet safety, environmental, regulatory and economic requirements
n
- Collaborate with geology,



geotechnical and operations teams to optimise ore extraction and mine performance
n
- Provide technical support and guidance to daily mining operations
n
- Monitor performance against production, cost and operational targets
n
- Drive continuous improvement across mine planning processes and systems
n
- Manage departmental budgets, cost control and financial reporting
n
- Mentor and develop junior engineers and technical team members
n
- Ensure compliance with applicable mining legislation, safety standards and regulatory frameworks

About You

n

n
- Bachelor's Degree in Mining Engineering or equivalent
n
- 10+ years open pit mining experience, including at least 5 years in a supervisory or superintendent-level role
n
- Strong leadership and people management capability
n
- Advanced proficiency in Deswik and mine planning software
n
- Strong understanding of geotechnical, hydrological and environmental considerations within open pit mining
n
- Proven ability to develop and deliver mine plans aligned with production and cost targets
n
- Experience in large-scale gold mining operations highly regarded
n
- Strong project management, problem-solving and decision-making skills
n
- Experience with budgeting,



cost control and financial reporting
n
- Professional Engineering registration, or eligibility for registration, desirable
n
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical information into clear, practical direction
n
- Sound understanding of mine safety, regulatory and compliance requirements
n

This role is offered on a FIFO basis either from Australia/New Zealand (preferred) with a 21/14 roster on a contract basis with a highly competitive remuneration package.
