EL1 UX/UI Lead Designer – Federal Government

Our Federal Government client is seeking experienced UX/UI Lead Designers to lead complex digital initiatives focused on improving customer, participant, provider and staff experiences across large-scale digital services. This is a strategic and hands-on leadership role, responsible for driving user-centred design outcomes across discovery, design, validation and implementation phases. You will provide expert UX/UI guidance, influence decision-making across multidisciplinary teams, and help shape the future of digital experience design, accessibility and service delivery practices. Working within a complex and cooperative environment, you will lead the resolution of user, business and technical challenges while contributing to design systems, governance frameworks, capability uplift and continuous improvement initiatives.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

- Lead and contribute to complex UX/UI design activities across discovery, design, validation and implementation.
- Lead the resolution of complex user, business and technical challenges, balancing competing priorities and objectives.
- Develop and review implementation-ready designs, prototypes, interaction specifications and supporting design artefacts.
- Provide expert advice on UX, UI, accessibility and human-centred design best practices.
- Influence strategic decision making across multidisciplinary teams, programs and stakeholders.
- Drive the evolution, adoption and governance of design systems, standards and reusable design assets.
- Mentor and coach designers while contributing to capability development across design teams.
- Promote knowledge sharing, organisational learning and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Identify and apply contemporary design methodologies, tools and technologies to improve service outcomes.




- Support the development of scalable design practices that enhance organisational maturity and consistency.

Essential Requirements

- Demonstrated experience leading complex UX/UI design activities across discovery, design, validation and implementation to deliver high-quality digital products and services.
- Proven ability to resolve complex user, business and technical challenges while balancing competing priorities and delivering evidence-based design outcomes.
- Strong experience providing authoritative advice on UX, UI, accessibility and human-centred design practices.
- Demonstrated ability to influence strategic decision making across multidisciplinary teams and programs.
- Excellent leadership, stakeholder engagement and relationship management skills in complex environments.
- Experience facilitating collaboration and influencing senior stakeholders to achieve positive outcomes.
- Demonstrated experience driving design quality, consistency and capability uplift through mentoring, coaching, governance, standards development and knowledge sharing.

Desirable Skills

- Experience leading design teams, communities of practice or design capability initiatives.
- Experience delivering accessible digital services aligned with WCAG and inclusive design principles.
- Experience working within Federal Government, public sector or highly regulated environments.
- Experience supporting large-scale digital transformation, service reform, customer experience or participant experience programs.
