HOBAN Recruitment is seeking an experienced APS6 level Finance Officer to support a busy and dynamic federal government team based in Surry Hills, Sydney. This is an excellent opportunity for a finance professional with strong analytical capability, stakeholder engagement skills and experience managing budgets, forecasting and financial reporting. Working under limited direction, you will contribute to strategic financial management, business planning and quality assurance activities while supporting informed decision-making across the organisation.
About the Role
As an APS6 level Finance Officer, you will be responsible for delivering high-quality financial management, reporting and advisory services within a complex government environment.
Key responsibilities include:
- Analysing and interpreting financial and statistical data to support strategic planning and business outcomes.
- Undertaking detailed variance analysis against budgets and forecasts.
- Managing financial administration across cost centres and projects, including budgeting, forecasting, accruals and expenditure monitoring.
- Preparing financial reports, business cases, briefings and corporate documentation.
- Developing correspondence and responses for senior stakeholders and ministerial submissions.
- Collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to resolve issues and support project delivery.
- Coordinating and reviewing cost estimates for system and business change requests.
- Managing quality assurance activities, audits and integrity reporting processes.
- Exercising delegated financial responsibilities in accordance with relevant legislation, policies and guidelines.
- Providing professional financial advice to support informed operational and strategic decisions.
- Competitive pay rate of $55.24 per hour , including casual loading, providing you with financial stability and recognition for your expertise.

About You
To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate:
- Previous experience in a finance, budgeting, forecasting or financial reporting position.
- Strong financial analysis and problem-solving skills.
- Experience preparing financial reports and business documentation for a range of stakeholders.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel and financial systems capability.
- Ability to interpret legislation, policies, procedures and financial guidelines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Solid stakeholder engagement and relationship management abilities.
- High attention to detail and commitment to quality assurance.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and deliver outcomes within tight timeframes.
- Experience within the APS or broader government sector will be highly regarded.
