Position & Purpose
We are seeking an experienced and community-focused Senior Planner to lead the delivery of statutory and strategic planning services across one of Western Australia's fastest growing regional centers.
This position is suited to an experienced planning professional who understands the unique opportunities and challenges of regional local government. The successful applicant will provide expert planning advice to Council, developers, landowners, government agencies and the wider community while ensuring planning outcomes support sustainable growth, economic development and the preservation of rural and heritage character.
The role offers the opportunity to influence the future development of the town through sound planning principles, practical decision making and strong stakeholder engagement.

Key Responsibilities Statutory Planning

- Assess complex development applications, subdivision referrals and planning proposals.
- Prepare recommendations in accordance with the Planning and Development Act, Local Planning Schemes, State Planning Policies and Residential Design Codes.
- Provide professional planning advice to Council, the CEO, Executive Management and internal departments.
- Prepare reports for Council meetings and Development Assessment Panels where required.
- Manage planning appeals and represent the Shire during SAT proceedings when necessary.
- Interpret and apply Western Australian planning legislation.

Strategic Planning





- Lead and contribute to Local Planning Scheme amendments.
- Assist in preparing Local Planning Strategies, Structure Plans and Place Plans.
- Identify future land use opportunities that support housing, commercial, industrial and rural development.
- Work collaboratively with State Government agencies including the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage and the Western Australian Planning Commission.

Stakeholder Engagement

- Develop productive relationships with developers, consultants, government agencies and community members.
- Provide transparent planning advice to residents and businesses.
- Present planning matters to Council, community groups and public meetings.
- Mentor junior planning staff where appropriate.

Compliance & Governance

- Ensure planning decisions comply with relevant legislation and Council policies.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of planning processes.
- Maintain accurate records and reporting systems.
- Promote high standards of customer service and professional integrity.

Essential Selection Criteria Applicants should demonstrate:

Qualifications

- Degree in Urban and Regional Planning, Town Planning or an equivalent qualification recognized by the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA).
- Eligibility for membership of the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) is highly desirable.
