From planting the first crop of bananas over 76 years ago the farming business has expanded to produce bananas, papaya, sugarcane, cattle and avocados. The business is now directed by the family’s 3rd generation and the company employs more than 550 employees across 9 locations stretching from Cooktown to Melbourne. In more recent years, this vertically integrated business has expanded into sales, ripening and processing of produce.

About the Role

Golden Banana Services Pty Ltd trading as Mackay Group is currently seeking a motivated agronomist to join the team.

In this role you will be actively involved in all key agricultural activities including, crop protection and nutrition, innovation projects and trials and monitoring and identification of issues that may influence crop health & yield.

Reporting to the Senior Agronomist, the key responsibilities of this role include:

- Liaise with various internal and external contacts including Farming Managers, suppliers and contractors.

- Pest and disease monitoring, reporting and providing input into crop management systems.





- Assist with on-farm calibration of fertiliser spreaders, air-blast misters and spray booms.

- Conduct trial work including the collection, analysis and reporting of trial data

- Report and communicate all monitoring and trial results, findings and recommendations to the GA.

- Assist with the ongoing management of IPM & Biological systems approach to Tropical production in the Wet Tropics.

- Undertake and provide support on research and development activities, assisting with the experimental design, development of trial protocols, execution of field activities, data collection, data analysis and report preparation.

- Provide agronomic support within current diversified cropping systems and future projects.

- Inspection of crop health and irrigation requirements

- Soil and Tissue testing to facilitate management of crop nutrition requirements and strategies.

Skills and Experience

- A degree in Agricultural Science or other relevant discipline related to crop production

- Knowledge of Crop Nutrition, Crop Irrigation and Pest & Disease management

- The ability to analyse, interpret and report on data.

- Excellent attention to detail

- Demonstrated ability to work both independently as well as a part of a team

- Competency with Microsoft Excel, Word

- Drivers Licence
