Junior Lawyer - Melbourne-based Commercial Law Practice Summary

- Compensation: $85,000-$95,000 base + super

You'll join a Melbourne-based legal practice with a well-established client base, working on commercially pragmatic matters across loan and mortgage origination, insolvency, debt recovery, litigation and conveyancing.

n

What you'll do

n

n
- You'll manage supervised litigation, insolvency and lending matters from opening through to resolution, keeping files moving day to day rather than sitting in a pure support role.
n
- You'll draft a steady volume of legal documents, including correspondence, pleadings, affidavits, submissions, settlement deeds and related matter documentation.
n
- You'll conduct legal research and turn it into clear, practical memoranda for senior lawyers.
n
- You'll appear in suitable interlocutory matters, including directions hearings and winding-up applications, with supervision.
n
- You'll assist with caveats, mortgages and PPSR registrations, while also supporting work across debt recovery, contractual disputes, directors' duties and Corporations Act matters.
n
- You'll communicate directly with clients, courts, counsel and counterparties, help with settlement discussions, and stay on top of deadlines, file progression and accurate time recording across multiple live matters.

Who we're looking for

This role will suit you if you're early in your legal career and already comfortable taking ownership of day-to-day work under supervision.

Must-haves

n

n
- Around 1 to 2 years' experience in a law firm, with the ability to progress matters without needing to set overall legal strategy on your own.
n
- Admitted to practice, or eligible for imminent admission, as a solicitor in Victoria.
n
- Strong legal research capability, including confident use of LexisNexis, Westlaw and CCH.
n
- Practical drafting ability across pleadings, affidavits, correspondence and other court-facing or transactional documents.
n
- The ability to manage several live matters at once, keep deadlines moving, maintain organised files and record time accurately.
n

Nice-to-haves

n

n
- Experience in commercial litigation, dispute resolution, insolvency or lending within private practice.
n
- Exposure to debt recovery, contractual disputes, directors' duties or Corporations Act matters.
n
- Experience with PPSR registrations and, ideally, related security documentation such as caveats or mortgages.
n
- Early hearing exposure, including directions hearings, winding-up applications or other interlocutory work.
